How do they work? Would 3,000 air miles earned convert to a 3,000 mile flight?

You need about 30-40,000 miles to do a 3,000 mile flight. Sorry!

I have miles with Delta, American, United, Hawaiian, Philippines, and I can't remember all the airlines. I'm pretty much covered anywhere I go, and I accumulate miles everywhere. We fly free a lot, because of all the miles I get for mission work. Also, we convert our Amex miles into Delta miles and we are both Platinum with them.

When you learn the systems, it can be such a money saver!

I don't travel at all right now. I was opening a bank acct and had the option to select a debit card that will rack up flyer miles. Now I'm not sure it's worth the $30 anual fee.
