What is wrong with this paragraph
Quote:
We wholeheartedly disapprove of our people indulging in any activities which are not conducive to good Christianity and godly living, such as theaters, dances, mixed bathing or swimming, women cutting their hair, make-up, any apparel that immodestly exposes the body, all worldly sports and amusements, and unwholesome radio programs and music. Furthermore, because of the display of all these evils on television, we disapprove of any of our people having television sets in their homes. We admonish all of our people to refrain from any of these practices in the interest of spiritual progress and the soon coming of the Lord for His church
|
This is a statement that the UPCI disapproves of certain things that it feels would cause a person to "give place" to a worldly mindset. It is all about indulging in ANY activity that is not conductive to good Christianity and Godly living. It is not a prohibition list, but examples are laid out as to what they are refering to.
So I have to ask why so many feel that it is a bad thing?

At face value - nothing is wrong with it. The application of this paragraph has become problematic. Annnnd, I suppose you could say the language is a little archaic.

It's missing a period on the end?

The problem is not the things which people are admonished to abstain from.
The problem is the attitude betrayed by the phrase "our people". In the context, the phrase "our people" connotes chattel, rather than brethren.
This is symptomatic of the common attitude, that preachers are in effect lords over God's heritage. "My church". "My saints". "My people."
Too many think the saints are too stupid to think for themselves, and so God sent preachers to think for them.
(Disclaimer: If this diatribe offends readers, too bad.)

It's all about control.
Also, contrary to your statement, it indeed has been and is used as a prohibition list.

I just realized something. What Charlie Brown posted from the manual isn't instruction to the ministers. It's instruction to the churches. Haven't ministers insisted over and over again that the UPC does not try to control the people in churches, that they are just a ministerial organization? Read it again. It repeats "our people" several times and not once says "ministers, pastors, or preachers."
These are rules being given to the people in the churches, not guidelines for ministers.
