John 20: 2 “Disciple whom Jesus loved”

Who do you think the “disciple whom Jesus loved” "The other disciple "was? I have been told John, the son of Zebedee and there is also some argument for it being Lazarus.


John 13:23 Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.

John 20: 2 Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the LORD out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.
3 Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre.
4 So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre.

John 21: 20 Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?

The phrase only appears in the writings of John. Jesus loved all the disciples dearly, but John knew it. This was John's way of boasting of the Savior's love for him. He was living out the reality of Jesus' love. John was the only disciple who stayed with Jesus all the way through His trials to the cross. We find John employed in ministering comfort to our Lord in His dying hours. He was there for Jesus to say to him, "Take care of my mother".

Peter, however, boasted of his love for Jesus. But before the night was over we find him denying that he even knew Him.

Big Larry,thanks for your reply.I have always believed this to be in reference to John.I was in a discussion with a co-worker recently that believed it to be talking about Lazarus.this was his argument:

Lazarus is the only man named in the Bible that is specifically identified as being "loved" by Jesus. Before Pentecost, only fifteen verses mention Jesus' love. Three of these reference Jesus' love for Lazarus, and five others refer to "the disciple whom Jesus loved." The Bible has only seven more verses prior to Pentecost that overtly mention Jesus' love: Mark 10:21, Jn. 13:1(2x), 13:34, 14:21, 15:9 & 15:12. Not one of these verses names anyone, and only Mark 10:21 refers to a single individual.


I was just curious to see if anyone else believed that way.Not much interest in the thread, so i suppose he is in the minority with his belief.LOL

I think it is John as well. Since John wrote the Gospel of John, it was more humble and fitting to not refer to himself using his own name.
