Inspiration from the Garden!
Just stopped by this website with some really great quotes about gardening.
http://www.gardeninggonewild.com/?p=26349
Some of my favorites:
I think this is what hooks one to gardening: it is the closest one can come to being present at creation. Phyllis Theroux
I do some of my best thinking while pulling weeds. Margaret Smith
It was such a pleasure to sink one’s hands into the warm earth, to feel at one’s fingertips the possibilities of the new season. Kate Morton
Who has learned to garden who did not at the same learn to be patient? H.L.V. Fletcher, 1949 There are 35 of these quotes.... check them out!
Have you planted your garden yet? I hope to plant mine this weekend....

Got mine all in! It's a little early so I hope it doesn't freeze!

Re: Inspiration from the Garden!
We have purchased some heavily wooded property that has never had a garden. So, we are working on starting a garden there.
I have a new appreciation, and admiration for my ancestors! We rototilled up the area where we are putting the garden, but now I have to go back through by hand, and pull out all the rocks, weeds, roots, grass, twigs by hand. I spent two hours yesterday with a steel rake, hoe, and pitchfork, and I was EXHAUSTED!
How did they do it? I can't imagine the exhaustion that you would feel working like this all day, day after day! I only did it for two hours.
I still haven't planted yet. I'm trying to recover today from the efforts of yesterday.
Has anyone started a garden from a forest floor before? Any tips? One good thing is that we have about 2 feet of beautiful top soil to work with.

Re: Inspiration from the Garden!
get rid of all leaves/needles, as they contain acids that will inhibit your garden

Re: Inspiration from the Garden!
We've done some gardens from scratch. Not from a forest floor though. Do you have a lot of roots in there?
I don't envy you, not one bit!

Ha! That's work like finding a needle in a haystack!
So, I went in with a steel rake, and pitchfork, and scraped out as much as possible. Still, after raking the entire garden area twice (20x20') there were tons of roots still poking up out of the ground, but at least the major needles, leaves, roots, rocks, and grass roots were for the most part gone. I decided that I would just worry about the row where I was planting, and leave the space between the rows work to be done later.
