Holiness books

What books would you recommend to read that speak to holiness and the history of the holiness movement?

I'm looking for books that have to do with holiness in general and those that speak to the "standards of holiness" aspects of it. In regards to the 'standards of holiness" angle, I'm looking for books that both support and oppose the angle.

Not just books though, position papers and scholarly works recommendations are welcome as well.

Thanks.

Bro. Sam might be able to help you out.
And I think a poster named Apprehended has a lot of books about the subject.

I don't know much about "holiness" books.

Several years ago I read a book titled "Vision of the Disinherited." I don't remember much about it but I it was about the "holiness movement" and then went on into the breakup between oneness and trinity. From what I remember the author said it was not so much about the differences in doctrine but about who or what section of the country would "control" the new organization. Anybody remember that book and what it was really about?

As far as "holiness" teaching, a couple of suggestions would be the old "Search for Truth" literature. I think they spelled out some stuff about dress codes, etc.

Another possible source. There used to be (I think still is) a school here in upper downtown Cincinnati called God's Bible School. This went back to "old time" holiness, Wesleyan, Nazarene theology. If it's still around you might be able to find some of their teaching/writings through Google.

Re: Holiness books

GBS is still around, I know someone that works there.
I haven't read this book, but I want to, it's Bro. Booker's "What A Difference A Line Can Make". Maybe that book will help. I saw the table of contents, it looked like it covered a lot of holiness issues.

GOD BLESS!

By the way, this isn't a book, but a website with a lot of literature and articles on holiness. This group is the MOST conservative I know of, www.churchofgod.net, they branched out from the Church of GOD (Guthrie, OK), which branched out of Church of GOD (Anderson, IN) which was started by Daniel Sydney Warner, who broke from the Church of GOD (Winnebrenarian). This whole Church of GOD movement I found to be awfully interesting to study the history of.
Then of course you've got you're Methodists/Wesleyans, your Bible Methodists, Allegheny Wesleyan Methodists, ect. That's if you want to study the "holiness movement" outside of Oneness Pentecostalism.

GOD BLESS!
Bro. Alex

There's one out called "False Holiness Standards." I can't remember the authors name offhand, but she's a Oneness gal, who I think left the UPCI. I'll check my bookshelf for more. I know there's more. Just can't think of them.

One of the posters here, Newman, may be able to help you. Send her a pm. Or check out her posts, you may find something interesting.

Re: Holiness books

I would recommend that you go to the Pentecostal Publishing House and look at books by David K. Bernard. He has several books on the subject of holiness.

Re: Holiness books

David Wasmundt has a couple of books on "holiness standards."
He was a minister with the UPC for years and does not agree with some of the things which were taught as "standards" over the years. He has a web site where you can find out about what books he has available and information on ordering them. His web site is

I have read some of these works. Good books. Hard to find bias, but I am sure someone will try and point out something. He does question alot of things and some emphatic questions. Never makes fun or light. Worth the time and money, IMO.
