A Question About Fireplaces
Maybe Bro Hoover can answer this one, we tried lighting up our fireplace one time & the damper was open but the burning log's smoke didn't go up the Chimney but proceeded to fill the house & go upstairs.
The Vietnamese family that was living there at the time thought the house was on fire and proceeded to natter in thier native tongue wondering if we were okay & if the fire department should be called.
We live in a duplex.
Does it need cleaning?
Could there be some critter who lives in my chimney?
Is it Chip & Dale?

Many possibilities and nattering in tongues won't fix it.
Let's eliminate the two obvious ones you mentioned first. Is there a proper bird/animal gaurd on the termination?
Have you burned over a cord of wood since it has been swept and/or is there more than 1/4" of soot or creosote visible when shining a light up beyond the damper?
Chip & Dale? Isn't that a furniture style? If your chest of drawers got into the chimney it is a fair assumption you have a blockage.

First answer-NO!
Second Answer-there probably is a blockage of something.
Will dynamite or metamucil get the job done?

You need me with my fully equipped service vehicle to work some charm on your wallet - er... umm fireplace!
This whole experience should be relatively painless and done without the meds or IEDs... but do plan on cashing in a few CDs.

I think someone quoted off hand about 100-200 Canadian not including the cost of explosives or evacuation of surrounding neighborhoods!
When can you get here?

The chimney should be (I believe it's) 2 foot higher than the highest point of the roof... if it's not, you can get a down draft from the wind going over the peak of the roof...
