This coming Sunday evening is the Day of Trumpets. It announces the Seventh Month on God's calendar, heralding the Day of Atonement and the
Feast of Tabernacles.
Atonement speaks to God's provision for the cleansing of our sin. It represents the Divine Judgment against sin and pronouncement of Righteousness and Holiness upon God's people. It speaks of both the passion of Christ on our behalf, and the coming Day of Judgment.
Tabernacles is a prophetic memorial. A memorial because it commemorates the time when, sustained by the Divine Presence, God's people sojourned in the wilderness, dwelling in tabernacles or "booths". Prophetic, because it speaks of when God would tabernacle with us in Christ, and yet again it speaks of when God Himself shall dwell on earth with men, when the harvest is completed, and death is no more.
Trumpets is the announcement that these things are approaching, a call to assemble for judgment, and fellowship with God. Sin must be atoned for and judged before we can truly dwell with God, whether in this life or the next. Trumpets is the loud alarm of the Gospel, to prepare to meet God.
Trumpets isn't just about blowing on horns. The actual terms used go beyond horns, and apply to any loud noise. It is literally the Day of Loud Noise-making. "Blessed are they who know the joyful sound".
Maybe this Sunday evening, and Monday day, remember to make a loud, joyful sound, because the Atonement has been made, God dwells with us in this sojourn of ours, and the Perfection of Creation is on its way.
