Money making ideas for homesteaders
Ok folks. Gonna let you in on a bit of the madness.
I have some ideas on some things to make a little extra income on the homestead.
Theres a micro hydro electric company named Turbulent that creates micro hydro electric generators.
I'll post links to things I mention because there are some nifty stuff out there.
So anyways, on top of having no electric costs you can feed the excess back into the grid for payment from the power company.
My idea has a few more steps and it involves cryptomining.
The reason cryptomining is a hassle at the moment is that its so power intensive that the power costs to run the equipment outweigh the profits unless you're doing some crazy exchanging and trading.
If the overhead for the power was a non issue I imagine you can get pretty creative with the possibilities and if you live in areas like NH *Free State Project WOOT WOOT! lol* they widely accept crypto currency all over the state.
Another idea is to market your processing power to others and passing the savings to them thereby making it an attractive investment to others without your off grid infrastructure setup.
Take your profits and either invest in further homestead upgrades....maybe clearing some land with a good southern view....start a modular solar farm that can be easily upgraded as funds come in which will bring in more cash from the power companies which again you can upgrade or pocket the proceeds as you see fit...or use it to increase the size of your mining setup.

Now the most obvious way to implement this would be to have a river or creek etc on your property but Im thinking *and I could be totally wrong* that you can implement a solar powered water pump to pump water from an aquifer to make a artificial spring and have a large enough catch pond to let it build up enough to release it through the MHG...not really clear on all the exact math...just spitballing here.
A second idea is to grow herbs for concentrates and essential oils or plants for food. Here is a high tech greenhouse made from a 40 foot shipping container.

Re: Money making ideas for homesteaders
I have a suspicion that you might spend more money and energy (electricity) setting up an artificially powered water flow for the microhydro electric generator, than if you just used straight up solar, with maybe a wind turbine (possibly using an old car generator/alternator)?
I also think, re making money/income, right now the best return on investment, with the least amount if investment, is to start several e-commerce businesses (Fulfillment By Amazon, eBay, shopify, Facebook, etc). Especially if you build them up to where each is both profitable, and scalable, then you can flip them for cash to do it again only bigger.
Money can be made in things like real estate but it takes a lot of investment, either a lot of cash, or exceptional credit, or LOTS of know-how and tons of networking, you have to really hustle and lots of people go bust. It can be done, but I think ecommerce gets you on your way to income quicker and easier.
Flipping mid-sized businesses (mergers and acquisitions) can be very profitable, and it can be done with little to no personal cash, but it's very difficult to get into unless you know someone in the biz already who is willing to be a mentor or partner (preferably both).
I'm currently learning all I can about ecommerce right now. I think that's the quickest and easiest way to get extra money that's scalable and worthwhile.
"Sell to the classes, dine with the masses; sell to the masses, dine with the classes." That's what I've heard.
Although, people building high end custom homes seem to be doing pretty good...
The guy yall met who builds container homes... perhaps you can parlay your encounter into a business deal, or employment opportunity... perhaps you could advertise / sell the homes for a fee. You'd just need to find customers who otherwise would not find that company, you bring him the customers, earn a commission, etc.

The Turbulent website says pricing starts at 2500 Euros per kW. That's about 2800 USD. Average price for solar is about 3050 USD per kW. So a savings of about 250 USD per kW. But that's a really low ball estimate, not counting unknown costs that the website didn't mention.

Gardening for money: everything I seen in that regards focuses on fast crops (mostly greens, salads etc) for sale to local restaurants and co-ops.
Plenty of utube videos covering "success stories" in that regards.

Cryptomining: I believe it takes multiple servers and lots of time.
But...
People make real money mining or obtaining in-game "money" for MMORGs (so?) or other online games. They literally sell the game money to gamers for real cash money.

Re: Money making ideas for homesteaders
I'm currently looking into ecommerce (shopify, drop shipping, etc). People are making tons of money doing that, its not actually that difficult, and entry fees aren't as high as say real estate or brick and mortar businesses.

I found several Shopify businesses (ongoing) for sale in the 7k-12k range that currently earn around 5k per month in net profit (not gross returns).
