Bishop Wright's Shame Seminar Rides Into TX

Bishop Chester Wright, of the famed letter denouncing "the relevants among us" , like Mark Johnston, will be riding into Texas ... primarily targeting the Houston area ... with an interesting ministerial campaign ....

See promo video here (definitely a must see) :

http://vimeo.com/20854605

This is the promotional website:
http://shameseminar.com/

This should be interesting .... looks like Rob's hosting one of these too.

Brings up some interesting topics of discussion ... do you agree with each aspect that is attributed to causing shame? What role does a legalistic or extrabiblical culture have in creating "shame"?

Is there any thing about shame that is healthy ... beneficial ... advantageous?

Is shame not part of our carnality?

I've got some other questions about the timing and targeted area of this but I will abstain for now.

I did not take the time to go see the video.
Maybe later.
I would say that shame plays an important part in any culture.
Therefore it would play a part in the church.
However, when we become a new creature, shouldn't we leave the shame behind?

An interesting statement from the beginning of both videos is something like this:

Most people suffer from SHAME ... they think they are struggling against sin or their flesh/carnality ... IN REALITY THEY ARE SUFFERING FROM SHAME.

Another interesting sound byte from the Vimeo video is that Wright believes that one of the things holding up "Apostolic Revival" is shame and that the pouring down will happen when his people are made "whole"

If the shame is a result of ignorance (fixation on something not really sinful), then by all means, help! If it's a result of sin, then it's healthy. Shame and condemnation differ. Shame drives us to the cross. Condemnation drives us away from the cross.

I still don't completely get the conference and the shame plug. Are they pointing everyone to the cross? Telling them to feel better about themselves? What's the catch?

It might be a good idea to listen to the videos before commenting. I'm only on the tenth video, but this appears to be his point and it is valid to discuss, IMO. A few excerpts:

Quote:
Shame says, "If God is going to give me anything, I've got to work for it. I've got to earn it. I've got to deserve it."

But, your Father does not do what He does for you because you've earned it. He doesn't do for you because of what you do. He does for you because of who you are.

The only way I can love me is to accept His love for me. His love for me tells me my worth.

I can't forgive you, because I don't forgive myself. You can't forgive somebody else until you first let the Lord help you forgive yourself. And if you aren't forgiving yourself, you're never going to forgive other people. Because, I do to you what I first do to me. And what I do to me is either based on what shame convinces me to do or what the love of God convinces me to do. Which are you going to believe? Shame or God?

It's all based on His love. And what is the one thing that shame attacks the most? My ability to believe that God loves me, because I am this terrible person. I'm broken, I'm damaged goods, I am all of this bad stuff. And I may be really trying hard to be this good person to prove to myself and others that I'm not a bad person, but the problem is, deep down inside, in my heart of hearts, I can't get rid of it. I can't get rid of it.

His love for you is based on relationship. It is not based on performance.
Too tired to listen to anymore tonight.

One more:

Quote:
My performance does not give me a relationship with God. My relationship with God gives me the ability to perform. I don't do what I do to be loved by God. I do what I do because I'm loved by God.

The love of God is the motivator. It's the mover. It's the thing that makes stuff happen. It's not the goal that I'm trying to obtain to. I'm not trying to obtain the goal of being loved by God. It's believing that I am loved by God that is the means whereby I can obtain the things that God wants me to obtain.

Video one glaring statement: Christians do no have shame because they struggle with sin. People struggle with sin because they have shame. Shame is the root cause of ALL self-destructive behavior.

I don't believe I commented a whole lot, or at least even directed criticisms toward the preacher. Not sure why you responded like that.

From the onset, and the few videos I've watched today, to be gimmicky.
