I've never actually practiced this, but it seems like it could work.

Yeah, that is great, but it is a real mental block. I have literally stood and stared at my living room for almost an hour, and then went outside and worked in my garden. It is much easier to focus on something that I feel like I can control, that is why I think it is more a mental issue. Trust me, I am not lazy. My brain just goes fuzzy.

Focus....Where does it go?

Got a garage...get it out of the house... start big...rearrange the furniture... then it will get the ball rolling...

SHE and FlyLady should help you a lot.

I totally, totally, totally get the standing there and then walking away cuz I have no idea where to start.

If you can, grab a trash bag and set the timer for 2, 3, 5 minutes (whatever doesn't feel overwhelming) and just walk through the house throwing away whatever catches your eye. It's not methodical, but it's a start. If you do that every day, maybe a few times once you start feeling some motivation (aka..seeing progress) you're going to notice that it looks better, and less overwhelming.

She could go to the Library and check out one of Don Aslett's books.

My husband sent me a few hints a few weeks ago I think LOL... he bought me new furniture... then a new tv... then a treadmill that I had been begging for... So I had to reorganize the whole stinkin house! Now I gotta do the garage but thats cool... The kids even had me organize their rooms and WOW the difference!
