If I wasn't cool talking about it publicly, do you think I'd really have posted that on an Apostolic forum? I *have* been reading/posting on one Apostolic forum or another for almost a year now. (this *is* the first time I've posted about this)
You are correctly understanding what I'm saying. Why? I dunno. I haven't done a lot of seeking. There have seriously been far more important things to straighten out (obviously, I don't feel speaking in tongues is necessary for salvation).
Guilt? I don't think there's been much guilt. A lot of other emotions as I've sorted things out, and let God do some sorting, but I'm not sure guilt has really been there.

She said you know how some people make sounds that are not really understandable? Well that was not you. You hit the floor speaking in another language as plain and clear as anything. I do not know how long I prayed but It felt like no time at all but when I got up there was very few people still around the front most had already started leaving.
That was 34 yrs ago this June.
It has not been an easy road but Thank God I am still on the same road.

Sweet. Man, you were 9? I was 26! Can't help but wonder what life would have been like had I received as a youngster.

Re: Where Were You When You Received?
It was June 22, 1967 when I was 14 years old on the platform at the old Missouri District camp ground in Westphalia, MO. The altar was full so some of us went on to the platform.
The preacher was JD Collins, who a few years later became my pastor and helped officiate my wedding on June 22, 1974.

Ok. So you are not part of the Holy Ghost is necessary for salvation crowd. Just so you'll know (in case you don't already), I am part of that crowd. I am not going to give some long lecture on it being necessary for salvation, though. I would like a day or so to think about what you've told me so far before I say anything else, if that is ok with you. I try not to point people in any particular direction unless I'm really feelin it, if you catch my drift.

I didn't know which side of that fence you were on.
Take your time. But, come Tuesday I won't have internet for an undetermined amount of time. lol
I do catch your drift.

Re: Where Were You When You Received?
Sunday night, May 20, 1956 (Pentecost Sunday) Bethel Tabernacle (UPC), Racine, Wisconsin at the altar after the preaching. I was kneeling, my hands were raised, and I was praising the Lord --not quickly, but slowly glorifying God. I realized that I was saying something in English but it would sort of go off in another babble of words or sounds. I just surrendered, kept praising, and the language flowed clearly.
I was 18 years old and graduated from high school a week or so later.
I had been baptized in Jesus' name on October 27, 1955 in a UPC church named Elim Tabernacle in Milwaukee, Wisconsin but I did not start attending a UPC church right away. I continued for a few weeks at the local Baptist Church in Union Grove, Wisconsin (about 30 miles SW of Milwaukee and about 15 miles West of Racine).

1954 in Ventura Calif. on a Wed. night in a rented VFW hall. We had to pick up the beer cans and mop the floor before service.

Re: Where Were You When You Received?
Yesterday, two different people told me about how/when they received the Holy Ghost baptism.
Another brother and I made a hospital call as part of the Home and Hospital team for the Vineyard church where I used to go. We visited a woman in the University Hospital in Cincinnati. She is 57 years old and has just been diagnosed as having cirrhosis of the liver. She is not a drinking person and has not been on pain relievers. The doctors cannot give her any reason for the disease and have not prescribed any specific treatment. She thinks she will be put on a transplant list but since she is not covered by medical insurance through her job (she is an LPN at a nursing home) she may not be considered a candidate. I asked her how she came to know the Lord. She replied that when she was 9 years old she went to a tent meeting near her home in West Virginia. She went forward and accepted Jesus as her Savior. The preacher put his hand on her head and prayed for her and she began to speak in tongues. The guy who was with me asked her if she still spoke in tongues and she said yes.
The second person was a woman with whom I was talking after Bible Study last night. We have three services going on at our church on Wednesday nights. The youth group (7th grade through high school) meet in the church basement. Because there are so many children coming we have started using the auditorium for Super Children's Church. We have 60-70 kids in there and our pastor has been in charge since the beginning of May. The adults who are not involved in the other ministries meet in a room upstairs and I have been doing the teaching. We have from 5 to 20 or so. After the service I was talking to the pastor's mother. She told me that she had some problems with the idea of speaking with tongues because of her Baptist background. She had some bitterness in her heart because of the way she was treated by relatives after her mother died when she was just a teen ager. She had prayed about it and tried to forgive but was having problems. One night she was praying alone at home about the forgiveness issues and a loud, weird sound came out of her mouth. She looked around to see if it had scared the dog, but the dog was in another room and seemed OK. She continued to weep and pray and it just came out in another language. At that time she felt free from any bitterness and unforgiveness.
Just thought I'd pass these two stories on since I heard them both yesterday and they fit this thread.

Re: Where Were You When You Received?
September 1994 -- I went to the POA because they had some fine girls. I don't remember what was preached, but I was crying a lot. The altar was so full that I ended up in one of the aisles going to the altar. I was sitting indian style and crying like a baby. My former English teacher and others were praying with their hands laid on my back. The las thing I said before the Lord filled me completely was -- God I'm sorry (I had been living like a heathen). Such a rush and presence of God came over me that it was quite some time after before I realized that I was speaking in tongues. Praise JESUS!!! WOOOO I love the Holy Ghost!!!!

No real problem exists over the use of "The Name" in everthing else done in the Church. Why then should there exist great controversy over the use of the "The Name of the Godhead" in water baptism?

Re: Where Were You When You Received?
I was 11 years old at a storefront church a woman was preaching a revival and the pastor was committing adultery and the music was horrid. But my experience has kept this 45 years.
