I couldn't agree more. What is it that causes that in your opinion? We are dealing with a situation locally that just blows my mind, I don't understand why so many people seem to want hype over substance.

It's a tricky balance Dizzy. I've seen churches that went
through bad experiences with the gifts so they became all
"word" churches and no spirit. and i've seen plenty of all
gifts, shouting, dancing and no word.
you have to have both and you have to carefully balance
the 2. If you have just one or the other you'll eventually die

Have you been to virtually any gathering of UPC people at a conference? It’s often hype over substance. People tripping over themselves to hop around in the aisle because bro. so and so is yelling into a microphone that we are, “One God, holiness, Spirit filled, Jesus name baptizing, born again of water and Spirit, bless God. WHEEEEEW.”
I think I have seen that a few times, no way too many times.

what's wrong with that ? a conference or a camp is meant
to encourage, revive, rejoice etc. There is often teaching and
classes in the day- something for everyone

I feel like we do a really good job at having that balance, but I have seen so many people lately choose to sit under an undisciplined, rebellious spirit, just so they could have the "gifts" operational in every service. With basically no Word.
Personally, I thoroughly enjoy Sunday services with the Spirit in full operation, but I love Wed. night Bible study, that is where I feel like I am growing in my relationship with God. If I had to choose, I would choose Bible study, hands down.

If that's the case, let those kind of people go and don't cry
over split milk. they will never last in the long haul anyways.
I've seen so many examples. we had a so called prophet
leave our church and take a group of people. the church
eventually folded and they went totally off into STRANGE
DOCTRINES!!!
in this last day we need it all. we need to gifts of the spirit
in operation ( the REAL Thing), sound teaching, fellowship
and worship- all of it.
we have people that only come to bible class
because they "come to church for the WORD". they are also
messed up in the head.

i know what you mean. of course conferences are a time for renewal and excitement, but time and time again i've sat through meetings that i felt were all about the preacher saying things b/c they KNEW it would get a response. like the above mentioned. and pentecostals are very quick to respond when any kind of "us vs. them" preaching occurs.

I always get a little sick to my stomach. I tend to avoid a lot of those conf. for that very reason.
