It has to be even too. The first square is the largest and when you add the most squares inside that you get 17
But the very center square evens that to 18
Count the two smaller squares that is 20 then count the squares inside that that is 28
Count the squares that 4 small squares put together make in each corner and that is 32
Count the squares the 4 small squares put together along the sides and that is 36
count the squares the 8 small squares put together make and that is 40
