You have to understand that your offer destroyed your credibility with him by being so ridiculous. You need to at least be rooted in reality.

I agree with the credibility issue. I would be curious as to the salesman's reaction to your offer. It probably ended your discussion rather abruptly. But, live and learn. Failure is only the opportunity to more intelligently, begin again.

We have yahoos visit our store and offer us rediculous prices on our pianos.

I usually ask if that is the maximum amount that they can afford to spend, or is it the maximum amount that they are willing to pay for that particular piano!

If its all that they can afford to spend, I'll move them to something closer to their price range.

If its all that they're willing to pay for a particular piano, I usually smile and dismiss them as not being a credible buyer. I'll try my best to once again establish the value of the piano. Hopefully, they'll make an offer closer to what I can accept or I can give a counter-offer to.

I will never give a counter-offer to a rediculous offer. I will stick to the established price! The reason is because rediculous offers are a waste of both of ours time! If the yahoo is serious about his offer, I'm better off to blow him/her off and concentrate on serious buyers.

I drove a Buick into an Olds showroom. After the Sales Manager told me everything I knew was wrong with my car, he then insulted me and offered me $700 trade-in on an Alero (11000 car then). I went to a local used dealer and paid $10000 for a used Chevrolet and was very happy.

I was surprised at this response, and felt justified when Olds went under.

If I were Bro Eastman, I would go back to the dealership again.

I've been told that the best day to buy a car is the last day of the month! If they're close to a sales goal, they'll bargain with you more to reach the goal!

There may be certain times of the year where dealers with too much inventory are willing to sell at a car at a loss. (Reference BOOM's posts). Most of the time that is not the case.

Thats a 7000 dollar difference.....unreasonable? Well if you are the buyer it's very reasonable...unless the owner is a great great great friend of yours or you have kidnapped his daughter...I doubt the owner will think it's reasonable

The price on my car was pre-negotiated by AAA and then the car had a 2000 cashback incentive which was uped another 500 while I was there. I was happy

Buying new means you lose money just driving it off the lot. That doesn't make practical sense to me. We buy used.

There are some factors one needs to consider and know about before hand...

Is there a factory rebate included? Are there dealer incentives (cash incentives the dealer gets from the maker)....if you KNOW about those dealer incentives before hand you might be able to use it to negotiate...

How much of the money is going to be cash?

I agree. When we bought our Chevy Venture-- we paid $12,000 for it. It was a 1998 model. It was a one owner vehicle, low mileage and had been very well maintained. We bought it in 2002. New Chevy Ventures at the time were going for around $27,000. The "NEW" price wasn't worth it to me. We had most of the bells & whistles that were available in the new model... for less than half the price. The van still looks as just almost as good today as it did when we drove it off the lot. It gets about 28 MPG average... and has plenty of room for the entire family plus luggage.

The down side was that the engines this particular model should have been recalled due to faulty camshafts... and that I had to put a $2000 engine in my van 3 months after I bought it-- BUT... other than that, I've not had any trouble out of it. I guess it could have happened with any vehicle. (But realistically, a Camshaft should never break) Due to Chevy not standing behind something that should have been recalled (Numerous people with same complaint were found on the net) when this one goes to the junk heap-- I will NEVER purchase another Chevy. (Sorry for the vent, that just always comes out when I talk about this van purchase LOL)

We've also got a 1995 Ford Ranger that we paid $4000 for in 1998. It still runs like a new truck... and we've never had to do anything to it other than regular maintenance.
