I have always understood the word usage that we read as "world" in the reference that started this thread could be appropriately stated as "adornments".

With the word "adorning/adornments" as the witness and our understanding that man looks at the outward but God looks at the heart, the love issue we need to consider is whether our affections are based on images or the invisible things.

Outward adorning has a purposed message with a desired outcome. It has its own economy and currency and neither pertain to, or seek to transact in, the things that are eternal.

To me what this verse means is that we are not to love the lifestyle that non-believers have arranged for their lives. We don't emulate the lifestyles of the ungodly.
As believers our lifestyles and value system are different from unbelievers.

Adornment certainly can be a witness of where our love and affection lies and what it is based on but not necessarily.

Worldliness is a heart/love/affection issue. It's possible to have a pleasing modest outward look but an empty heart, shallow living and in the secret places of the mind and heart a desire for worldly carnal fleshly things and a lack of real love and devotion for the Lord.

You can't love God with your whole heart, soul and might and at the same time be sold out to the "world" ......... which as I said in an earlier post is in direct conflict with the will of God and the kingdom of God.

Which has the preeminence in our lives. The things of the world? Or the things of God? You can't serve both at the same time.

In verse 16, it clearly states that the "world" is lust and pride!

I've never thought of that scripture in that way before. I always thought that the lust of the eye, lust of the flesh and the pride of life was just part of the flesh/sin issue ... and part of the struggle that goes on in regard to the flesh.

I think the adornment mentioned in this verse means order or arrangement ,and I think it pertains to lifestyle. If one is not a believer his or her lifestyle will be adorned in things that are not Christian.
If one is a believer his or her lifestyle will be adorned in things that reflect The Lordship of Christ.

If one is not being led by the Spirit of God ,certainly walking after the fallen Adamic nature will lead to lust and pride.

No, it doesn't. It says things that are IN the world and OF the world. Note the passage (1 John 2:15-17):

"Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever."

Notice the phrases "in the world" and "of the world." The passage doesn't say that the things listed "are the world." Notice in verse 17 it says "the world...and the lust thereof." This, again, does not say that lust IS the world.

Right. This is how I see it too.
