A couple of years ago I needed a new desktop and didn't feel like building my own so I decided to try a new Gateway. Bzzzzzzzzz! Bad idea! It isn't that it didn't work its just that I had the warranty voided within hours of taking it home and spent nearly as much upgrading the sound card from the horrible chipset on the mother board to a higher end Creative Labs as well as a Radian 5850 video card. I also replaced the hard drive with a 60gig OCZ SSD and a 1 terabyte data-only drive. And since it was a Gateway those two cards took up all but but slot! Gateway also decided they knew what was best for me and locked out most of the BIOS features -I see them, they're just all greyed out and non-accessible. Oh yes, I also upgraded the processor from the cheaper Duo Core quad core that came with it to the best (at the time) that I could find -but not overclockable since that was locked in the BIOS.

So to make a long story short, I AM building my next one and plan on going the Ivy Bridge route when these processors are released in a month or two.

Second shop around, you might find a better deal on the same PC you want than just at BB. Also BB's warranty they pressure you to buy is expensive and often unneeded. The only thing I buy warranties on anymore is on anything I can't fix myself. But at Frys electronics their warranty is far less costly and they have a lot more choices usually than BB as well as good prices

Everytime I have tried to buy stuff at BB the sales person tried to lead me around the store with a basket and filled it with additional stuff to spend money on
Your advice about BB is similar to mine. I think they will see Cindy coming for a mile! One in ten chance she gets a good knowledgable sales person and a 90% chance it will be someone just interested in how much they can sell her.

So where do I buy? From Dell?

I like Lenovo (IBM Thinkpad) But many like Dell. As far as finding a deal and getting good reviews, I use Amazon reviews as my ultimate ratings source. Tons of feedback.

Agree on no extended warranty.

I think it is actually OK to go to Best Buy. Just remember two things: Say NO to any special Geek Squad services and say NO to any extended warranties. I think just about any computer package in the 700-1000 range will work out just "swell" for you. And by package, that includes the monitor, main case, and possibly some el cheapo inkjet printer (although you can probably skip on this if you already have one). Despite my misgivings in buying a Gateway, I think it would actually work out for you as well as ASUS or HP. Nothing in that price range is going to have too LOW of a spec in anything.

You DO realize that most of us CAN NOT fix a computer??? And I don't know about you but having one poop out after the initial warranty (usually 1 year) and coughing up another several hundred dollars to fix or replace it would be more than an inconvience.

Also anyone, even lil' ole Cindy, should be able to say NO to a bunch of extra junk... Up front is probably best... as in "I'm here to buy a computer with a monitor and a printer today but I do not want to talk about buying anything additional at this time please (insert very sweet smile here).

As I recall you are on a tight budget? If so I would not be loyal to any particular brand. Try to find what is the best deal at the time you are ready to buy keeping in mind some of the advice you have been given as to the minimums to look for in a computer.

If you check out the webiste http://www.techbargains.com/ daily they show pretty much about all of the computer deals out there online and in stores like Best Buy or Wal Mart. Look at the navigation bar across the top and you can choose either desktop or laptop and it will filter the results for you. It displays the deals by date with the most recent first. If deals have expired or are sold out they indicate that also.

They also have a navigation bar for "coupons" to display any promo codes from Dell or other places for special discounts.

As far as independent price searching goes you can go look directly at the Dell, HP, Gateway, websites along with Best Buy, Walmart and all of the office stores (office max, office depot, Stapels). Not to mention reputable online places like wwwtigerdirect.com

Re: Buying A New Computer

I just need a tower thingy, my monitor, keyboard, and mouse are fine. They are all from Dell.

I can sure do that last part.

Re: Buying A New Computer

Computers are so cheap now, they are almost throwaways. At less than $300 they really are.

Now, I can see you can complain if you spent $3,000 on one. I would want the best warranty.

My Dads first computer was a 8086 with only 2x 5.25 floppy disks. That was $2500 from Sears. I spent that much in 99/00 for the top of the line machine I built myself. It lasted me until 2008 when I HAD to replace it for how much it was out of date.
