Don't forget the washing detergent, deodorant, bath pampering products, etc. Doesn't have to be just food.

I didn't think of that, Renda. Great idea! Good laundry detergent can be costly.

What about scales if they are newlyweds.
They can watch the pounds fly on.

I'm Canadian and I never heard the expression "pounding" before for what we call a grocery shower until I started posting on forums.
It's definitely an American term and a wonderful thing to do to help people out.
When we started what was basically a home missions church the small group of people we were meeting with had one of these for us and kept us in groceries for months. I'll never ever forget the kindness and generosity of those people.
They sacrificed SO much and were so good to us and amazing things were accomplished in just a short time.
All those groceries, staples and meat kept our grocery bill very low.

That is wonderful, Felicity.
I remember my husband getting laid off and a couple from church brought over 10 lbs of chicken leg quarters. I was using a smoker and couldn't get the charcoal quite right. Oh, Lord! In my frustration I squirted some extra lighter fluid and WHOOSH!!! Blackened chicken. We peeled the skin off and ate it.

Back when I administered poundings, I liked to include stuff like broken noses, black eyes, etc.
I swore off all that stuff when I gave my heart to God completely though.

BTW...I've never heard of a grocery shower or have it refered to as a "pounding". How very interesting.
