I have some fond memories of Brother Mahaney. It is sad to see him pass. He ate more than a few meals in our home when I was a boy. This is one of the ministers that I would sit at the dining room table in my dads lap and listen to the stories these great preachers would tell.
what great and precious memories.
The first time he came to our house, he brought a 2 leter diat coke AND DRANK THE WHOLE THING....lol!

My friend Rob F. pastor was Joe Parker, Mahaney was in revival with the Parkers in Federal Way. After church, Mahaney tells Joe Parker to go get some chicken, 2 buckets to be exact. After Joe Parker arrives, he takes the buckets of chicken (2 mind you) and tells Joe Parker, Parker (gravel voice) where's your chicken?
Charles Mahaney was certainly a character! I had heard him in the late 70's preach the same sermons about his conversion over and over again and became tired of them. Then sometime around the early 90's I was visiting FPC in JAX only to find out that he was going to be the guest preacher. I tried to hide my disappointment as I thought I was going to hear another message about thunderbird wine and "she went this way and I went that way". Much to my pleasant surprise he preached a very deep eloquent sermon that blessed me greatly! The originala Sis. Craft came up to me after church and while we were talking she smiled and said something like "not the same Mahaney you remember eh?". I laughed and told her no that he had indeed broadened his ministry and it was great.
I last heard CM around five or six years ago at Rex Johnson's church when I was visiting back in Austin. I came in late to the service and he had been in the pulpit for a few minutes already. He was in the middle of a story that had me in stitches in no time. He was very transparent and honest in telling his part of this funny story. It was something every man would have probably thought or done the same thing in that situation but not something you exepct to hear a preacher admitting to over a pulpit.
If I had one word to describe him it would be "unique". (Thank God there was only one!!!!).
I am praying for his family during this time of grief.
