Re: For 3 days, where was Jesus' soul?
Prax,
This is where my studies have also led me. We have confused the KJV "hell" to always mean the lake of fire, but it ain't necessarily so.
It is important to know these meanings in their text when dealing with JW's.
It also explains somewhat the Catholic belief of purgatory, but not their belief of being prayed out of purgatory.

Even with the KJV's usage of the word, hell, I've always separated it from the lake of fire because of the passage in revelation where death and hell is thrown into the lake of fire.

Bro. Norris (Apostolic Bible Institute) compared Hell/Hades/Sheol to the jail and the lake of fire/gehenna to the penitentiary.

Bro. Norris did not believe in "soul sleep"

Re: For 3 days, where was Jesus' soul?
I haven't had a chance to read the whole thread yet, but I get the idea. Mark Morgan has a sermon he preached 'What Jesus Preached In Hell'. It refers to those three days. I'm not sure if it's possible to post a sermon, or even if I knew how. But was quite interesting. It could answer alot of questions if you could get your hands on a copy.

From what I remember, Bro. Norris taught that sheol (Hebrew) or hades (Greek) had two compartments. The wicked (like the rich man in Luke 16:19-31) went to one part where there was torment and the righteous (like Lazarus) went to another part called Paradise or Abraham's bosom. There was a great gulf between the two and people could not travel back and forth. When Jesus died and then arose triumphantly He took the souls from Paradise/Abraham's bosom to Heaven and now Paradise is in Heaven ( 2 Cor 12:2-4 where the third heaven and paradise seem to be used interchangeably).
Actually, I think he compared the bad part of hades to a jail where people are held until their trial and then are sentenced. The trial would be like the Great White Throne judgment and the sentence for the wicked would be the lake of fire or gehenna.
I sure don't claim to be an expert on this. There's stuff about it I don't quite understand.

This is the best article on understanding what the Bible teaches about Hell that I've ever read. It will help you understand when Jesus went there.

Thanks... I agree with this guy that we believe more about hell from Greek mythology and the RCC than what the Bible teaches us. : )
