I have seen this a number of times. The speaker comes in late, is ushered in by body guards and is escorted out so that no one gets a chance to interact with him/her.
I really detest this. I think it smacks of pride and arrogance.
Is this really necessary?
What could possibly happen to a minister that they need THAT kind of protection?
So do they just come in, minister, get their offering and then split?
This really HONKS me off!!!! (could you tell?)
I have not read any of this thread yet and someone may have already posted this but the answer is easy.
One time back in 1978 Elder Epley was preaching his famous "sleeves" message in a moderate Pentecostal church. A large burly man who perhaps was not quite full enough of the Holy Ghost and who had not heard a sermon on the fruit of the Spirit in a long time took offense since his wife was in fact wearing short sleeves in that service.
Suffice it to say that Eler Epley barely escaped intact after that service. Luckily the guy swung high (4 ft.) and missed Elder Epley's head by a good six inches. That bought enough time for the ushers to restrain him and usher Elder Epely out to the AMF horse and buggy for a quick escape to an out of town restaurant for that after service meal.
After that Elder Epley has deployed a private security force made up of young ministers in his church for any public events he may be at. After relaying this to his father who is active in the charismatic movement the concept spread like wildfire and was adopted by many major charismatic ministries as SOP.

I knew someone here on AFF would have the answer!!!! It never fails! Epley is always right smack dab in the middle of whatever it is that is going on. It must be that hyper holy atmosphere that follows him around!!

I could probably almost understand this for a real "celebrity" in Christianity, but I have seen too many wannabe's who didn't need security any more than a Robin needed an ocean to swim in!
It was laughable to see them with their "amor bearers" with the headsets in their ears etc. In all honesty, I was embarrassed for them.
I agree that it's not necessary in some cases, perhaps not even most, but for the big name guys, yeah.....many of them need 'bodyguards'.

The individual I'm speaking of is only treated that way because he's seen in that light by others. He doesn't put himself there, but because others do, he has to be escorted to the pulpit or he'd never make it there.
He was hospitalized in another country and his website pleaded with people NOT to come see him! Can you imagine?
This guy has people literally follow him around the country to every conference he preaches at. It's those people who make things difficult and they are the reason the preacher has to be treated like royalty and escorted in the church.
