First, $10 is not enough anymore to feed a family of 5 at McD's.
I'd rather, as Apostolic1ness posted, go to a grocery store or market and get far more with that $10.

I'd buy three boxes of spaghetti (or three different boxes of a pasta), 3 cheep spaghetti sauces, and a gallon of milk. We might get sick of eating spaghetti after three days, but we'd have a hot meal for three nights from $10.

I've seen those types too. They typically work under the table somewhere, deal drugs on the side, or sell food stamps 2 or 3 to 1.
I've also seen families in outright squalor who don't do anything like that and truly struggle.
I don't mean to praise bad behavior... but when you're poor, and you're intelligent, you learn to hustle. You'll hustle anything, game any system, and make a buck to get what you want. Because without doing so, you'd never afford it in a million years.
But it frustrates me sometimes. I'm not a big fan of welfare. I believe it should be temporary. No one should be on assistance longer than 3 years in my opinion. And I'm only giving time for one to get some kind of job training, education, or certification.

Re: "Food Insecurity" Issue
We grow much of our own food.
Been a great year for tomatoes!
The wife has been canning away.
I am ready for some cool weather so that we can get to the "meat" harvest!

What a load of whopping generalities. There are thousands, if not millions, who do not behave like you have observed. It's your kind of generalizations that make getting help such a taboo for some who actually need it the most.
