divorce and remarriage?

Does the bible mean what it says that divorce is only accepted by God for the reason of fornication or is this just another statement that either God changed his mind on or the author was delusional?

Re: divorce and remarriage?

1 And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judaea beyond Jordan;

2 And great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there.

3 The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?

4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,

5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?

6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

7 They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?

8 He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.

9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.

10 His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.

11 But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given.

12 For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it. Matthew 19:1-12 KJV

I think maybe they were outcast from society. But verse 7 mentions divorce.

  2. The Son is God himself in a human form or "God manifested in the flesh" (1Tim 3:16)
  3. Every sinner must repent of their sins.
  4. That Jesus name baptism is the only biblical mode of water baptism.
  5. That the Holy Ghost is for today and is received by faith with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues.

And considering how Jesus defined adultery, is there any woman on the planet that doesn't have grounds for divorce?

Re: divorce and remarriage?

I realize it shouldn't be a reason or prop for one to divorce and remarry. But is it a forgivable sin?

Re: divorce and remarriage?

I also believe in what is known as the Pauline Previledge. Jesus was addressing Jews. However, in the early church there was a question regarding what to do if one became a born again believer but one's spouse remained an unbeliever. Since Jesus never addressed this kind of issue, Paul speaks with Apostolic authority:
1 Corinthians 7:12-15
English Standard Version (ESV)
12 To the rest I say (I, not the Lord) that if any brother has a wife who is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him, he should not divorce her. 13 If any woman has a husband who is an unbeliever, and he consents to live with her, she should not divorce him. 14 For the unbelieving husband is made holy because of his wife, and the unbelieving wife is made holy because of her husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy. 15 But if the unbelieving partner separates, let it be so. In such cases the brother or sister is not enslaved. God has called you to peace.
The term used by Paul, translated "not enslaved" here, is a legal term used in ancient Rome when a man or woman was divorced and permitted to legally remarry.

Therefore, in my opinion, the only two Scriptural grounds for divorce that allow for both divorce & remarriage are:
- Sexual Immorality
- Abandonment by an unbelieving spouse
