Apostolic Bible study method(s)?

Has anyone ever looked through the New Testament to determine if the apostles had, taught, or used a particular method or methods of Bible study?

Obviously, people would be expected to learn the Bible, learn doctrine, etc. So did they have a method for doing that? Did Jesus, as a rabbi (teacher) establish or present or model a method of studying scripture?

Anyone have any thoughts on the subject?

he makes the point that the Early Church flourished without a NT, after the OT was deemed "fulfilled."

Interesting post.

One could review how Paul and the other writer quoted the OT to see if any hermeneutical principals could be determined.

Our Lord sometimes based his "sermons" on a OT story. How did he interpret it ?

I think hermeneutics are the same for most interpreters of the Bible. But just for fun, read some early church fathers who were allegorical in their interpretations. What imaginations they had.

yes; the Spirit has led me from reading interpretive works on Scripture to delving into a verse via the lexicon. I think an overall objective of a study can be determined, as a first step, and then let the Spirit guide you.

I was looking to see if the Bible presents any instruction on a suitable METHOD of Bible study. Did the apostles teach people how to study the scriptures? Did Jesus? Or did they just say 'let the Spirit lead you' and left it at that?

There are numerous methods out there, ranging from rabbinical '4 levels' (haverim-style) to standard Reformed 'systematic theology' approaches using the 'literal-grammatical-historical' methods, Kay Arthur's so called 'inductive Bible study', various 'deductive' methods, etc etc etc.

I was just wondering if anyone knew if the Bible itself suggests a particular methodology.

I'm pretty sure It does not. Also, i think you seek the Scriptures for Word of Me, when here I am in front of you should be contemplated; which does not mean don't study, but rather recognize the point of studying.

Re: Apostolic Bible study method(s)?

What method did Paul, Priscilla and Aquila use to share the gospel in Corinth?

Acts 18:1-4
After these things Paul departed from Athens, and came to Corinth; 2 And found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla; (because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome and came unto them. 3 And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers. 4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.

Acts 18:24-28
And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus. 25 This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John. 26 And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly. 27 And when he was disposed to pass into Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him: who, when he was come, helped them much which had believed through grace: 28 For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publickly, shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ.

By this we see that in those days, because they did not have the bible in a form such as we do now, that they used passages from the OT to teach the gospel, along with what Christ had done on the cross.

Stephen, in his narrative before his death, began to narrate the story of Israel, as did Paul when he went before the rulers of the day.

The story of Israel, tied in with the cross, was how they persuaded hearts to receive the gospel.
