To me Jesus is saying if He needed a defense here He would've prayed for twelve legions of angels, not take up a sword.

This is true, of Jesus. But can you pray and have God send you 12 legions of angels? Maybe God will, perhaps He won't.
Untold numbers of people have surely prayed to God in their last moments, to find themselves not delivered from the harm that was befalling them.
Jesus didn't want Peter to defend Him because He was going the way the Father had sent Him. As the very anointed Chosen One, because His entire life and death were ordained, and His purpose perfectly and Scripturally predestined, Jesus could know for a certainty when or when not, His hour was come.
Can anyone say the same of themselves?
