Please Help Me With A Scripture

Good Morning,

I've always believed in monotheism and will do until the good lord comes or I'm put 6 feet underground.

However, yesterday I was reading the bible and was having a little trouble understating a scripture. Can any theologian (lol) here assist me in interpreting this scripture?

My interpretation are in parentheses

Jesus spoke these words in John 16:13:

But when he (Holy Ghost), the Spirit of truth (Holy Ghost), comes, he (Holy Ghost) will guide you into all the truth. He (Holy Ghost) will not speak on his own; he (Holy Ghost) will speak only what he (Holy Ghost) hears, and he (Holy Ghost) will tell you what is yet to come.

Every time the scripture above references "he," it's referring to the Holy Ghost. Here's what I don't understand. Jesus said, "He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears"

Essentially, Jesus is saying that the Holy Ghost will not speak on his own, but only what the Holy Ghost hears. Who is the Holy Ghost hearing from and why is the Holy Ghost speaking words that another person is speaking?

What person is the Holy Ghost hearing speak?

Hey people are mostly doing something else around this time. It isn't like we have an army of posters. Give your thread some time. If you need an answer fast, ask the elders in your church.

Not a 'self-professed theologian', but my guess would be that the Father is being referenced. Jesus seemed to speak of that guy quite often.

So, the Father (Spirit) is speaking to the Holy Ghost (Spirit)?

Not even going to pretend I can explain it. (I didn't even look up the context of it all, but our brother seemed grouchy about not receiving any response. Ha!) Perhaps the soon to be risen Christ is doing the speaking at that future date?

What is it that He will speak?

Of righteousnes, reproving the world of sin, of judgment (vs 8-10). He will teach by leading the disciples into all truth (v 13, God's Word is truth - John 17:17). He will show the disciples things to come (prophetic revelation).

He will glorify Jesus because He will take what is Christ's and show them to the disciples.

All this indicates that the Spirit they were to receive would be a revelatory empowerment that would confirm and continue the teaching of Christ, and would not be some "new" thing heretofore unfamiliar to the disciples, as if they were going to be moving in some totally new direction, new purpose, new doctrine, etc.
