I disagree with this in principal.
I do agree that when commitment is absent than potential accomplishes nothing but potential itself is never nothing.
Potential is inside and, quite possibly, God given.
When I see someone struggling with commitment I still see the potential in them. The potential is still alive.
It is my belief that there is still potential alive and well that causes me to invest my time and energy into that soul.
Quite often I see people fail to invest in others because they currently show a lack of commitment and those who would have the ability to lead them cannot still see the eternal potential beyond the temporary struggle with commitment.
That can lead to an attitude where we just leave them to their own devices (and defenses) because we are not pleased with their current commitment level and fail to see the untapped potential inside.
If I have a large engine humming in my backyard but when I put the car in gear nothing happens... there is a commitment issue.
I don't say there is nothing there. I realize that there is a connection missing and I get my hands dirty trying to replace broken connections.
Some people are fixed.
Some people are broken.
They all deserve someone to see beyond what they are into what they can be.
