The real question to ask. Is why was saul on the outs with God and David was not?
I think partly it had to do with his disobediance. However!
I personally think it had to do with going to the Which of Endor and playing with spirits.
Saul even used David in his courts to sooth his spirit.
As stated before David in all of his sins never forgot the pursuit of God.
Saul saught after raising Samuel from the dead.
He forgot to pursue after God...
Saul wanted to sooth his own spirit and not pursue a relationship with God.
That to me is the difference in Saul and David.
