The Early Church
Does anyone know enough about church history to say what happened to the early church? did the early church evolve into the roman catholic church when constantine converted or did the early church continue as an apostolic remnant? how did the apostolic church fade away? what does this mean for christ's prophecy, the gates of hell shall not prevail against it?

The church evolved over time in several directions. At Constatines "urging" the church met to decide what doctrines would be essentially forced on to all churches. They met to decide if Arianism was right or "Trinitarian", though from all appearences it was an infant version of Trinitarianism
After Arianism was shot down, it was outlawed in all churches in the Roman empire. Arians were persecuted and forced to flee. Same sort of stuff happens in China with their "offical state church" that you can only belong to.
It was not a prophesy. It was a statement of fact. Christ builds HIS church on the Rock and any church that is built on the Rock hell has no power over. It's talking about sin and redemption not an institution being attacked by demonic hordes with pitch forks

Apostolic is defined on AFF as:
- There is One God. This one God reveals Himself distinctly as Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
- The Son is God himself in a human form or "God manifested in the flesh" (1Tim 3:16)
- Every sinner must repent of their sins.
- That Jesus name baptism is the only biblical mode of water baptism.
- That the Holy Ghost is for today and is received by faith with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues.
- The saint will go on to strive to live a holy life, pleasing to God.

Re: The Early Church
The "early church" was diverse, both ethnically and theologically. That's something a lot of folks miss. What happened to them?
Well... today the church is both ethnically and theologically diverse. Alot has happened, but very little ever really changes.

Re: The Early Church
The gates of hades teaching is a false doctrine as taught by most Teachers and Churches. Jesus was talking about the fact that the grave (Hades) would not be able to hold the saints at the resurrection.
Paul wrote:
15:51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
15:52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
15:53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
15:54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
15:55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, (HADES) where is thy victory?
Why does the Apostle teach that AT THE RESURRECTION the victory will be taken away from Hades?
Because HADES IS THE GRAVE!
At the resurrection when the Saints gain immortality then the saying of Yeshua that "the gates of Hades/Sheol will not prevail against the Church" will be fulfilled.

Re: The Early Church
the early early church was getting executed. so they fled and hid, in tunnels, caves and met behind closed doors.
one sign they used was that of the fish to show they were followers of Jesus, that is why we see little magnets attached to cars with jesus in the middle of the fish today.
christianity was broken and all over, with different areas, believing different things, such as arianism modalism, early forms of trinitarianism and gnostiscm,
as time changed these groups emerged and begain the debating among themselves. Modalism, was short lived do to the fact there was no seperation from the son and the father. the 2 theologies that grew and rivaled was arianism and trinitarianism. The Old arian view believed Jesus was not god and that he was not from the same substance of his father. Jesus was what the scriptures stated, the Son of God. Trinities wanted to keep the seperation of son abd father yet keep Jesus of the same substance and nature of his father.
constantine wanting to unit his nation saw fit to the bring together bishops from
all parts to discuss this. trinitarians doctrine would prevail, but would be short lived until the next emporer rose to power who favored arianism, and thus established it as the view of the Godhead. Later another ruler would change it back to trinitarianism and would stay that way.

Re: The Early Church
There is a difference between:
1. "the Church" which is the Body of Christ made up of all who have been placed/baptized into it by the Holy Spirit."
and
2. "the visible church or all those who claim to be Christian in doctrine, philosophy, and practice."

Re: The Early Church
This one subject can take up to 8 years to study in a Bible College or Seminary. Just thought I'd say that because the few thoughts offered here can't even begin to scratch the subject of what the Early Church did. People have given their lives to study it...
But...I'll keep following the thread.

Re: The Early Church
well we should use the word ekklesia and take away the word church, and go back to the assembly, but when i say church i am referring to a body of believers and not a specific church building

Its good stuff I like drawing parallels between the early church and what we now call church. HUGE differences, but shocking similarities too. Happy studying.
