Solar Cooking
At the risk of sounding like a complete environmental wacko, I would like to know if there is anyone here who has experience with solar ovens and solar cooking in general?
We're looking at getting one of these. It is by far the best rated solar oven on Amazon but there is still this consistent criticism of a "plastic taste" in the things cooked (although the majority say they do not sense it or only sensed it the first time or two).

I know this things use would be very limited in many midwest states and stated on the Northern West coast. But here in Arizona it just makes sense. And far more then saving electricity it would give us a way to cook (bake) food during an extended power outage.

RW, I had never heard of solar cooking. Sounds interesting so now I will have to do some research. I have a feeling my wife will cook just as much with a solar oven as she does with a regular one. That is, not much!

It is one part environmentalism, one part "prepping" (you know, societal breakdown and all that stuff), and one part fun (I like gadgets!).

I have gotten samples from two companies that produce the freeze dried / dehydrated emergency foods that last 25 years. The creamy chicken cheese rice dish was excellent. Sadly about 2/3 of the entree's with each company are just soups.
My first step preparing for an emergency is going to be stocking up on some canned meats with a couple of year shelf life, bulk boxes of rice, flour, etc and a lot of water. Don't have to expect the end of civilization to prepare for some unexpected emergency (natural or man made).

OK hold on... you got some food that lasts 25 years... and... you ATE it? Like you just got up with the munchies and decided to dig into the stash??? Or your wife forgot to cook dinner?
Store it man! If you ever need to eat the food storage I personally guarantee that everything with calories in it will taste divine!

I looked up the oven on Amazon and read a lot of the reviews. Very interesting. I would like to have one for emergencies but $250 is pretty steep. This will probably be put in my long term budget for emergency planning.
