Eden's lure
EDENS LURE
Breath of life to living soul, and Eden’s every door
Only one forbidden stalk bedecked the garden floor
When the curse our father gave doth hinder, oft we cry
Foolish Adam! Selfish mother! Oh my parents, why?
Plentitude! Divine communion! Everything so free!
Only one request of God, all but one small tree
Broken homes and tears and hatred, terrible the price
Bliss to forfeit, dampened brow, for one pathetic spice
Ah but quickly life doth bring the one forbidden tree
‘cross the path of each, to choose between the tree and He
Had I known its beauty, or its radiant display
I’d have understood the cross, of history’s blackest day
Grammar scarce portrays the splendor of its soft allure
Every gourd a masterpiece, meant for me I’m sure
Every absent heartstring that forever I did yearn
Found I on the branches of my one forbidden fern
Loveliness and symmetry and all that’s right for me
All my emptiness had found fulfillment on this tree
Oh my God, my present need, my every want I find
Dangled here within my reach, and waiting to be dined
Hot the battle rages deep within the walls of clay
In the valley, every fiber craves the wayward way
Had the Father’s promise not equipped me for the race
I’d have eaten heartily, my God, I’m saved by grace
