"Hello, this is Evangelist..." : Do you let them come preach?
I confess that I saw a thread similar to this on another forum and thought I'd like to see the responses to the question from some of the AFF crowd.
Every Pastor I know has, at some time or another, had a telephone ring only to answer it and hear, "Hello! I know you may not know me but I'm Evangelist (Insert name here) and I just wanted you to know that I'm in the area with some time off and wanted to know if I could come preach for you while I'm in the area?"
QUESTION: Do you let them come or do you generally turn them down?
QUESTION: What is your philosophy of dealing with those calling wanting to preach for you?
QUESTION: Have you ever been 'burned' by someone and wished you hadn't let them come?
This ought to be interesting and I'll hold my viewpoints for a little while to see what others think...

Let's hear your answers!
When my dad evangelized he would have references that he would share.
He would also do back ground interest checks on the pastor as well.
He got put into some crazy situations by not knowing who he was going to preach for.
I think the I'm in the area call does not happen as much anymore...
I'm not a pastor so my opinion matters little, bit the Bible says to know them that labor among you...
I'd be careful who I let address my sheep. Especially the young in the Lord.
Absolutely. I would be asking them who I might call for a reference, or who would I know that they know.
However, if an evangelist did come and preach something contrary to the church's teaching, I would hope the Pastor would get up and say that is enough and do a sermon of his own.

That snake oil might just cost more in the long run.

I know of a situation, ( I hope it rightfully pertains to this thread)
Where a pastor recommended an evangelist to other pastors, confident of the work that was done in his church by this evangelist would benefit others.
Well things started to unravel for this evangelist and they stated messing up with lies and other rather not so ethical behavior fitting a VISITING minister.
And other pastors started to complain to the pastor about the Evangelist.
So you know what that pastor did??? (BIG KUDOS TO THIS MAN)
He went to the evangelists Pastor (drove 2+ hours) and told the man all about it so the Pastor could handle the evangelist.
Plus he talked to all the other pastors letting him know what was being done!

If I have ever called anyone on the phone it was because I was referred by another Elder, and I had references for the Brother to check out. Know them that labor among you.
You want to help Brothers who are passing through and you can usually pick up on a right Brother when you speak with him and meet his family, but you still want to check his references and who he knows.

References and recommendations, I usually would have someone if a friend recommended them. Though I did feel sorry for a guy when I pastored in Idaho, he basically preached out of the Geography Section of the Thompson Chain Bible. Me and my wife still laugh about it.
When I evanglized I would have a host pastor call anyone that they thought would click with my ministry and I could help.
If I would have stuck with it, I believe I would have had no problem staying busy or booked.
But I got lonely and wanted to earn a Masters Degree.
