Passover 2015

Passover this year begins April 2, in the evening (Thursday evening). That first evening will correspond to the "Last Supper" (so called) and the night he was arrested.

The next morning will correspond to the day of his crucifixion, death, and burial.

Interesting that this year it corresponds to a "Friday crucifixion"... With the third day being the first day of the week (although he rose before sunrise).

In any event, are you doing anything this Passover to celebrate our Lord's death and resurrection?

Re: Passover 2015

What should one do to 'celebrate' this occasion? According to Paul, is not the cup, the bread, and footwashing the proper remembrance?

How do you celebrate Passover, Esaias?

Passover eve: Lord's Supper (full meal with bread and wine) with footwashing. Lots of readings, psalm- and hymn-singing.
Passover day: leaven hunt for the kids (find the last bit of leaven in the house to be removed), prayer at 9, noon, and 3.
Passover night: Passover Vigil from around sunset to midnight. 12 readings each consisting of OT, NT epistle, and Gospel account, psalm, and hymn, prayer etc. We read all four gospel accounts up to the burial.
First Day of Unleavened Bread: regular meeting at noon.
That night at midnight: Resurrection Vigil (lasts 2 or 3 hours) celebrating the resurrection with readings, psalms, hymns, prayers etc ending with a full meal with bread and wine.

The rest of the days of unleavened bread are just part of the festival season (albeit with no leaven at meals) until the last day which is a sabbath like the first day (we have church pretty much as usual, although the psalms and hymns tend to focus on the death and resurrection).

And yes we decorate the house with passover themed decorations!

All in all it's a blast.

Where is there justification for such observances under the ordinances of the New Covenant?

It seems, to me at least, as if Paul was expressly forbidding such things ......

"But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?

Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years.

I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain."
Galatians 4:9-11)

Paul forbade praying together, singing psalms and hymns, eating the Lord's Supper, reading the scriptures pertaining to our Lord's death and resurrection, all in commemoration of that singularly most momentous event? Not sure which Paul you are referring to.

As for the TIME of said commemoration, the Passover, Jesus observed the Passover and gave it it's new covenant significance. Paul further said "let us keep the feast" (in that new covenant significance).

As for the Galatians reference, the passage specifically says they were in bondage to the elements OF THE WORLD at a time WHEN THEY KNEW NOT GOD, and then AFTER BEING KNOWN OF GOD they were REVERTING to those elements. Those elements therefore cannot possibly the divine appointments of God which according to Paul were STILL shadows of things to come (several decades after our Lord's ascension they were STILL shadows of things to come).

The early post apostolic history of Christianity confirms that the church continued to observe God's appointed times (under a new covenant signification) until the apostacy successfully replaced them with pagan holydays and customs, sun-worship rites and celebrations, trinitarianism, clericalism, idolatry, and more and more superstition - many weak and beggarly elements of which still persist among Rome's harlot daughters even today.

God's appointed times are eminently suitable for illustrating and teaching new covenant gospel truth, and we have found that out by experience.

Re: Passover 2015

Your celebration of the Passover is far better than those chasing easter eggs and eating ham.

Wow. That sounds amazing. I wish we were close enough to come join you, but it's just me and Rob... and currently, we are staying with my pagan relatives, so it would be very difficult to do that in our situation.

Of course we could still do some of those things... like the reading, praying, psalm singing... Just not the leaven hunt, decorations, and stuff like that...
