Re: Tongues- A sign or THE sign Of Spirit Infillin

No one else here has seen cloven tongues?

Because there was no fire. Cloven, like as of fire.

Anyone that has witnessed the movement of a flame should understand this description.

I believe that as the fire fell and burned the sacrifices with the 120 priests present in 2 Chronicles 7:1 “...the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the LORD filled the house”, it wasn’t something that was necessary for a repeat nor did it happen again.

God brought the promise of the Spirit, the church was born, cloven tongues were “like” fire, so it was an impression and not real fire, and it wasn’t necessary for that impression to happen again. However, the tongues as initial sign continued and continue today.

Hmmm

I can guarantee you that if I were there, I would have been asking about the fire. I’ve seen plenty of drunk people. That is not all that remarkable.

There appeared tongues of like as of fire. Who did these cloven tongues appear to? Was it the newly filled disciples? Or the ones who heard in their own language?

The writer of Acts, Luke, wrote about it. No one asked about it. We see and hear people speaking in tongues today. If we are looking for something that looks like fire before we believe, we are going to be waiting around and missing the promise.

Re: Tongues- A sign or THE sign Of Spirit Infillin

The sign of my being filled with the Holy Spirit was when I spoke in tongues just like the rest of the believers in the NT. And just as Peter knew that Cornelius and his family and friends had been baptized with the Holy Spirit. There is no doubt about when such an important event happens.

And it is that simple.

I would venture to say any other way of viewing it is teaching another Gospel.

The premise of the OP is whether it is a sign, or the sign.

I think that we agree that there were other signs of receiving the Holy Ghost besides speaking in tongues in the New Testament.

It seems that there are some who believe that the cloven tongues like as of fire were not visible manifestations.

PO and Diakanos, am I understanding that you believe that the cloven tongues were not really cloven tongues that were visible?

What exactly do you believe Luke is saying here?

No, we don’t agree. There is only one way.

He was moved on by the Holy Spirit to write what he wrote. “Like” means you are comparing something to something you visually understand.

So are you saying that there were no tongues that sat on each of them?

Our physical tongues are not cloven.
