Calling Those with a Knack for Decorating...

...a skill I LACK, I need HELP!

We're going to (finally) redo our bedroom this Spring. On the To Do List:

1. Rip out the old, ugly green carpet. (I can't wait!)
2. Paint
3. Put in new flooring, probably carpet, but MAYBE hardwood, depending on the final budget Jeff gives me.
4. Buy new bedding and curtains
5. Jeff is building this entertainment armoire for our TV/Media -
media-hutch-plans.jpg turned leg media stand.jpg

--He'll probably stain it with a dark stain, but I'm not opposed to painting it--which would require me to choose a color.

6. Pick up a couple of bedside tables and lamps, and
7. Replace the existing ceiling fan/light fixture combo with something like this:

I know what kind of furniture I like--dark woods, simple lines, I'm not all that frou-frou. What I have a MAJOR problem with is picking colors.

Can you post ideas with pictures for combinations of curtains, wall color and bedding? Please, please, please?????? I'm totally stumped, and I've walked out of Lowe's multiple times without paint because I can't decide.

What I don't like:

Orange, purple or pink, or anything that looks tropical/jungle/safari. My husband doesn't want anything that looks too feminine, but he's left it all up to me, other than that.

I don't want to paint the walls white. (They're already a cream color.) I've gone with white everything (walls, curtains, bedding) in the past because I couldn't decide on colors. All white linens have some charm, but I don't want to cop out again just because I can't decide.

The trim and doors are dark cherry. If we do carpet, I'll probably go with something textured like this:

I've been wanting to take this project on ever since we moved in, and now that I can it's STRESSING ME OUT because I am abysmally bad at color choices.

Forgot to add in the lighting....

My safe choice:

The one I really like but I'm not quite sure about:

Re: Calling Those with a Knack for Decorating...

So what colors do you like?

Any particular patterns you like?

I'm assuming you have googled the subject? If you do bedroom makeovers, you'll find oodles and goodles of sites.

You said you don't like purple so you wouldn't like this.... but I just painted my bedroom walls a rich purple color. Called Magician's Cloak. My bedspread is white, my curtains are a cool black and white pattern that I bought at Target. I'm accenting with black/white, hot pink and a touch of turquoise.

I did my bathroom in a deep red with black and white decor.

(red and purple are my two favorite colors)

I adore decorating.

I love the second one. That's similar to my curtains.

If hardwood flooring is out of budget, would you consider laminate? It looks just as good. Rather than a fully carpeted room, place your bed in the center of a large throwrug/carpet.

If you want to find out your style, colors and fabric choices, start by looking in your closet. Whatever colors are consistent, that is what you like. Good luck!

Hmmm. Stripes are good...these are good, too:

I have. There are just so many choices... Here are a couple that I saved:

Well, I'm not opposed to all purples, but it's not my favorite. I actually kind of like that berry color on the media hutch from the previous post. The combination you described sounds really pretty. I love turquoise. turquoise chair.jpg

I adore...the results of decorating.

Probably not. We have laminate in the living room, and I want to replace it with hardwood, too. If we can't afford to do wood floors, I'll just compromise with carpet until we can. I will do a large area rug if we put in hardwood. I don't feel like the rug has to match everything else, so that seems like an easier decision. I like this one:

Wool Area Rug

Me, too! And it's a lot cheaper than the first one.

Good tip!

My closet is mostly black, white, cream, red, gray and khaki with some coral, turquoise, and dark brown thrown in. Fabrics: wool, cotton, tweed, crepe, brocade.

Best to find your bedding first, then build around it.
