2012 Solar Storm Almost Destroyed Infrastructure

Major news sources, not the fringe nutty internet publications, recently published stories about how earth had a near miss in 2012.

July 23, 2012 the sun released two massive clouds of plasma that barely missed earth. If the event had happened just one week earlier earth would have been directly in its path.

NASA and other experts say the result would have been massive disruptions with many satellites disabled, GPS disabled, giant electircal grid transformers on earth fried, etc, etc.

Not only would there have been massive power outages for many months or possibly years but in urban areas there would have been no water supply since it is pumped using electrical pumps.

I am a "mild prepper" who has done some mild emergency prepping because I believe a massive natural disaster like this, a terrorist attack, or economic collapse could quickly take America back to the 19th century. We are so reliant on modern technology we are wrapped in a cocoon of disbelief that this could happen.

I am pasting links to two articles on this event. One is CNN and one is the Washington Post. I hope you read them and consider planning for any eventuality. I am not talking moving to a cave but just common sense things you can do.

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.

"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.

"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."

Brother, that is depressing and leaves one feeling somewhat hopeless.

I don't think we should over react but it is sobering to think that our way of life is a lot more fragile than most people think.

The ripple effect of losing electrical transmission over a large part of the country would only take a few days to have devastating effect. Grocery store shelves would be wiped out in a matter of a few days with no new mass produced food products being produced in factories to replenish.

Luckily for my family we live in a smaller town (100,000) about 25 miles from a larger metropolitan area and I have a son who has a 21 acre little horse ranch about three miles outside of our town. While too close to town for my comfort in a case of society breaking down it still is a lot better than being in town. He has pastures and wooded areas on his property where we could have a garden, raise livestock, and build additional shelter. I wish he had a stream but he doesn't. There is moving water with fishing very close by though. The thought of 100,000 city folks with no food is a scary one though and I wish finances allowed me to buy some rural property even further away from population centers. With the real estate market being so depressed a year ago I could have bought 20 acres with a pond, pasture, barn, and 1500 square foot basic home out in the boonies for just $159,000.

Re: 2012 Solar Storm Almost Destroyed Infrastructu

I remember hearing something about it in the news when it almost happened. Apparently many were relieved that there was a near-miss, and there was a lot of talk about "what if". I believe it is good for people to be aware of just how fragile our society is, and how dependent we are on things that could all collapse like a chain of dominoes, and leave us, as you said, living perhaps even worse of than the 1900s, because much knowledge of living off the land has been lost.

It is not going to help you when this happens.
Whatever you have will be taken by someone with more firepower.
The only place with any reasonable hope of surviving would be Utah.
We have to keep our eyes on the sky...

It is diifficult for me to imagine folks with more firepower than my family has

We also will be in a secluded location that is easily fortified. Luckily if something like this happens those hordes of urban dwellers who will be violently seeking to take from others will be less armed, less trained, and know less about what they would need to know to take things from heavily armed rural folks who know their domain like the back of their hand. One key is to have your go to place be off the beaten path. You don't want to be in the traffic pattern of urban dwellers seeking to go elsewhere.

Re: 2012 Solar Storm Almost Destroyed Infrastructu

Reminds me of a text....
Luke 21:25-26 (KJV)
25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;
26 Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.
The next two verses give me chills...
Luke 21:27-28
27 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

One question: Why Utah?

My questions also! Maybe because of the Moromons? I think all good Mormons are supposed to have 7 years of provisions stored up or something like that.
