Ours is on only a few hours a day (and we have a 59 inch plasma!) but that is because we DVR almost everything. 
Recording the 2 hour season finale of Gold Rush right now.

my parents watch that. We dont have cable but when we are visiting them we are able to see it. Also like The Bering Sea

We watch videos and have internet. We will probably never get the TV hooked up. I think a TV on would irritate me.

one of my sister's leaves one of her TV's on all the time...just for noise....She has never mentioned the fact but I think she may be a little scared where she lives and maybe she thinks noise means more people in the house.... I never once have seen her watching it....

 thats a nice nite light ~ My daughter does this when my son in law works all night. Funny thing...my Gramma used to do this but put a towel over the screen. Asked her why she did this one day, she simply said..."I need the light at night to help me see if I need to get up for any reason, but the towel blocks out all the eveil spirits from getting in" ~ she was a very spiritual (from her Tribe) person ~
