Re: Is your church celebrating a Halloween alterna

An aside:

A few days ago at work, as I was walking past a co-worker to punch in, I was asked by the co-worker what I was going to dress up as for Halloween (my work allows this).

I said, "Nothing". I continued on down the aisle.

"Why not?" he asked. I kept walking.

"Because I don't participate in Halloween." I said, moving right along.

"Why not?" he asked, raising his voice.

Thoroughly down the aisle by now, I shouted back "Because I'm not a pagan!".

Our church family always has a get together in the Fall of the year. (we also have get together's other months of the year) Just a nice weather time to get out and enjoy each other's fellowship and of course, eat!! We don't consider it a Halloween alternative, as we don't participate in Halloween.

Re: Is your church celebrating a Halloween alterna

Fall festival earlier in the month. Nothing at all related to Halloween. We have hayrides, cross cut log saw competition, gun shoots for adults, BB gun and archery shoots for children, knife and hatchet throw, skillet toss for the ladies, wrench throw for the men, scavenger hunts for children and LOTS and LOTS of food! Nothing to do with halloween or any other holiday or unholy day. Just a good clean event for everyone to enjoy some fellowship and and fun activities in a beautiful outdoor setting, as the temperatures cool and the leaves change.

Let me know when you have yours next year!
Sounds a lot more fun than ours!

Re: Is your church celebrating a Halloween alterna

The church I grew up in was a solid conservative to moderate UPC church. Some considered us conservative and some considered us moderate. Growing up, some of my "good" memories were of "Trick or Treating". My older brother would usually take me and I would dress up (can't remember as what) and go all over the neighborhood collecting candy. Back then, times were not like they were now and the only other times we had candy were Easter and Christmas. Our church would also have Halloween parties for the youth.
As I grew older, Halloween seemed to change and became darker. Kids no longer went door to door, but went to malls as parents grew more concerned about safety.
We continued taking our small children to malls and to relatives houses, but no longer went through the neighborhood going door-to-door.
A job change took me to another church which was/is somewhat more conservative than my home church. This church had a fall festival, with no costumes or any trappings of the "modern" Halloween.
That was two churches ago, (due to job transfers) and the church we now attend still has fall festivals.
I see no "scars" on my psyche from my early year Halloween celebrations and none on the peers that I grew up with. In fact, almost everyone of that youth group is in church today and there are many ministers from that group.
Now, none of them "celebrate" Halloween, as that holiday has taken a dark turn.
Or some may say that it turned to what it really was.
Not sure there is a overall point to this story, just wanted to relate it for this discussion.

Re: Is your church celebrating a Halloween alterna

The alternative parties at Church on that day is to take the kids and families away from the having to deal with the knocking at the door. I believe that's the motivation behind. If instead of a fellowship fun, they want to replace it with a service, or a sport event that's fine too.

I don't think anybody does it at church to keep the bad spirits away or worship or anything like it. There is no superstition in it.

The men compete to throw a large cast iron pipe wrench. I believe its a 48" wrench. Not sure how much it weighs, but it's a heavy bugger and awkward to throw.
