Sean, why is Paul quoting pagans? The hymn to Zeus?

Nothing else matters now.

You have opened up the word of God to the Apostles teaching pagan ideas, quoting non-12 Apostle books as doctrine for the 1st century church..

The book of Enoch is now accepted as God's word.

I made my case, DB.

Titus 1:12

One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.

Why Sean?

Sean, the apostle Paul also quoted this chap above. Aratus was born in the province of Cilicia. Aratus is thought of one of the greatest poets in Greek antiquity. While Paul was at the Areopagus he uses Aratus Acts 17:28 The first line comes from Epimenides, the second part from the Hymn to Zeus from Aratus. If you would of read the thread, you would of seen that the ancient Bible writers don't give credit to Judean mythologies, or Pagan poets, but just showed that these other materials agreed with what the apostles were teaching. Not that they were holy, or divinely inspired. Jesus in Luke 20:29, quotes from a Deuterocanonical book Tobit 3:8, Tobit 7:11-13. These quotes from Christ or the apostles do not vindicate the writings of Judean mythologies, or Romans, but were books and writings known by their audience.

As for how Evang.Benincasa feels about 1 Enoch, it behooves you to start from page one and go from there.
Thanks.

Yes, done here.
I don't preach Enoch to God's saints. I will leave it to the pro's.
Peace out.

Re: Book of Enoch, 1 Peter, 2nd Peter, Jude parall

When Paul quotes these guys, it is indicated. When Peter and Jude quotes Enoch, it isn't. They write without explanation, as though they take it for granted that their readers will know exactly what they are referring to. Which means whatever they are referring to is indeed found in the scriptures, or was such a common understanding, it needed no explaining.

So, what sin was it that these angels committed that was so heinous, they were bound in chains of darkness to await the judgment? Certainly, it can be found in the Scriptures.

Good point, that the audience understood the material.
Because it was Judean mythology. Therefore bringing it up helped the Bible writer prove his point. Go back to my first post in this thread about Tartarus.
We can see how the Helenized Judean Peter is using the word and story to get his point across. Not that he was advocating the story as holy writ. But, interesting that you bring up that the story is surely in scripture. When we don’t have the story anywhere else but in Enoch. Please continue your thoughts on this.
