I feel like you're trying to force me to use the *H* word.

Re: committing suicide with a fork

thanks for the prospective.. Your right, many times sinners do look at you with a microscope.
I was told, if your full, and still keep eating just to be eating, this is what is sin.
Also I didn't want to hurt anyones feelings, yes, many people can be over weight and eat like a bird.
The illustration was just the words he said. Not intended to judge others.

I know it is. At the very least, it's the right word to describe the fervor in addressing addictions like drugs and alcohol versus the complete lack of attention paid to food addiction/overeating.

I thought about what I said earlier on the thread about approaching gluttony with compassion and understanding for the "complicating" issues, and I realized that any effective approach to addiction does that. When people struggle with alcoholism, for instance, you can't simply say "Stop drinking" and leave it at that. Addicts have to completely change their lifestyle to support their new choice, or they will lapse right back into the addiction. The alcohol has to be removed from their environment, the places they hang out have to change, and relationships that are destructive or enabling may even have to be cut off. There are family and community systems (including in the church) that support gluttony in the very same way that others support alcohol addiction. Family members who are always trying to feed you sugary, fatty foods, family time that centers around eating, socializing that's all about food, etc. We would be shocked if the church served alcohol to people struggling with addiction to alcohol, but no one seems to care if obese people are presented with huge arrays of unhealthy food and encouraged to eat it.

It is a huge problem, NPI.

Sister Alvear, I'm curious if any of those 'treatments' involved climbing stairs...
