Exodus to Revelation

Bible Study: The Eternal Deliverer

Theme: The progression of YHWH’s redemptive identity from the Exodus to the Apocalypse.

Part I: YHWH, The Deliverer of the Exodus

In the Old Testament, God reveals Himself not just as a Creator, but as a Kinsman-Redeemer (Go’el). The Exodus is the foundational "salvation event" for Israel, where God acts as the family protector of His people.

* Understanding the Kinsman-Redeemer: In Hebrew law (Leviticus 25:25, 47-49), a Go’el was a close relative who had the right and responsibility to step in and rescue a family member. Their duties included buying a relative out of slavery, reclaiming lost family land, and protecting the vulnerable. By delivering Israel from Egyptian bondage, YHWH identifies Himself as Israel’s closest kin, legally and lovingly "buying them back" from Pharaoh to be His own possession.

* The Name Revealed: In Exodus 3:14, God reveals His name as Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh ("I AM WHO I AM"). This signifies a God who is present, active, and self-existent. He tells Moses in Exodus 6:2-3 that while He appeared to the patriarchs and they knew His Name, it is by His name YHWH that He will now be fully known through His acts of rescue.

* The Power of the Arm: Exodus 6:6 uses the language of "an outstretched arm." The deliverance is physical: rescue from slavery, the parting of the sea (Exodus 14:21-22), and the destruction of the oppressor. Song of Moses: (Exodus 15:1-18)

* The Substitution: The Passover Lamb (Exodus 12:12-13) establishes the principle of "life for life." The blood on the doorpost is the only thing that averts the judgment of the Death Angel.

Part II: Yeshua, The Personal Salvation

The name Yeshua (Jesus) is the Hebrew name Yehoshua, meaning "YHWH is Salvation." This represents the "Type" of the Exodus becoming "Flesh" in the Person of Christ.

* The Fulfillment of the Name: In the New Testament, Yeshua claims the divine authority of the Father. In John 8:58, He explicitly states, "Before Abraham was, I AM," directly linking Himself to the burning bush. He is not just a messenger of the Deliverer; He is the Deliverer in person (Matthew 1:21).

* The Greater Exodus: While Moses delivered Israel from political bondage, Yeshua delivers humanity from the "Pharaoh" of Sin. During the Transfiguration in Luke 9:31, Moses and Elijah speak with Jesus about His "departure" (the Greek word is exodos) which He was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem.

* The Passover Personified: John the Baptist identifies Him as "The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). Paul later confirms this in 1 Corinthians 5:7, stating, "For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed."

* The Sabbath Rest of the Deliverer: Just as YHWH gave the Sabbath after the first Exodus to signify rest from slavery, Yeshua offers a "Greater Sabbath Rest" (Hebrews 4:9-10). Our weekly Sabbath keeping is a physical rehearsal of the eternal rest the Deliverer brings at His second coming.

Part III: The Deliverer of Revelation

In the Book of Revelation, the deliverance reaches its Cosmic Climax. The pattern of the Exodus is repeated, but on a universal scale.

* The Lamb on the Throne: In Revelation 5:5-6, the "Lion of the Tribe of Judah" is revealed to be a "Lamb, looking as if it had been slain." This confirms that the victory of the King is rooted in the sacrifice of the Savior.

* The Final Plagues: The Bowls and Trumpets of Revelation mirror the Plagues of Egypt.

******
Here are the scripture references linking the Egyptian plagues to the judgments in Revelation:

* Water to Blood
* Egypt: Exodus 7:17–21.
* Revelation: The 2nd Trumpet (Rev 8:8–9) turns a third of the sea to blood; the 2nd and 3rd Bowls (Rev 16:3–4) turn all seas and fresh water to blood.

* Frogs
* Egypt: Exodus 8:1–15.
* Revelation: The 6th Bowl (Rev 16:13) sees three demonic spirits that look like frogs emerging from the mouths of the dragon, beast, and false prophet.

* Boils and Sores
* Egypt: Exodus 9:8–12.
* Revelation: The 1st Bowl (Rev 16:2) inflicts "ugly, festering sores" on those who took the mark of the beast.

* Hail and Fire
* Egypt: Exodus 9:13–35.
* Revelation: The 1st Trumpet (Rev 8:7) brings hail and fire mixed with blood; the 7th Bowl (Rev 16:21) rains down massive 100-pound hailstones.

* Locusts
* Egypt: Exodus 10:1–20.
* Revelation: The 5th Trumpet (Rev 9:1–11) releases demonic locusts from the Abyss to torment people for five months.

* Darkness
* Egypt: Exodus 10:21–29.
* Revelation: The 4th Trumpet (Rev 8:12) darkens a third of the sun, moon, and stars; the 5th Bowl (Rev 16:10) plunges the beast’s kingdom into total darkness.

* Death of the Firstborn / Final Destruction
* Egypt: Exodus 11:1–12:30.
* Revelation: Paralleled by the 4th Seal (Rev 6:7–8)
Just as Pharaoh’s kingdom fell, the "Babylon" of the world falls to make way for God’s Kingdom (Revelation 18:2) and the final destruction of the beast's forces at Armageddon (Rev 19:17–21).

Thematic Connections

* Protection of God's People: Just as Israel was safe in Goshen (Exodus 8:22), those with the Seal of God are protected from certain judgments in Revelation (Rev 7:3, 9:4).
* The Hardened Heart: Pharaoh’s refusal to repent (Exodus 9:12) is mirrored by the inhabitants of the earth who curse God rather than repenting during the bowl judgments (Rev 16:9, 11).
* The Song of Victory: After crossing the Red Sea, Israel sang the "Song of Moses" (Exodus 15). In Revelation 15:3, those who are victorious over the beast sing the "Song of Moses" and the "Song of the Lamb" together.
******

* The Fulfillment of the Fall Moedim: The cosmic deliverance follows the calendar of the Fall Feasts. The Feast of Trumpets (Yom Teruah) heralds the King’s return; the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) sees the final removal of sin and judgment; and the Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot) is realized when God finally dwells among His people in the New Jerusalem (Revelation 21:3).

* The Song of Victory: Revelation 15:3-4 states, "They sang the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb..." This verse acts as the "glue" for the entire Bible. The victory song first sung at the Red Sea (Exodus 15) finds its eternal echo on the Sea of Glass. The deliverance is complete.

The Unfolding Deliverance: A Summary

The story of biblical redemption unfolds as a single, continuous narrative of divine rescue, moving from the national to the cosmic. It begins in the Exodus, where God reveals Himself as YHWH, the "I AM" and Kinsman-Redeemer (Exodus 3:14), achieving a physical and national deliverance for Israel from the bondage of Pharaoh (Exodus 15:1-2).

This pattern finds its personal fulfillment in the Gospels through Yeshua, a name meaning "YHWH is Salvation" (Matthew 1:21), who accomplishes a spiritual rescue by breaking the power of sin over The human heart (Romans 6:18).

Finally, this redemptive arc reaches its climax in the book of Revelation, where the Deliverer is revealed as the Alpha and Omega, the Eternal King (Revelation 22:13). In this final stage, the rescue becomes cosmic and eternal, as He decisively defeats death, Satan, and all evil to establish His everlasting kingdom (Revelation 21:4).

Reflection & Application

The Deliverer of the Exodus is the same Deliverer who stands at the end of history. He is not a distant deity, but a Warrior-King who has already shed His blood to ensure your rescue.

* Trust: In Hebrews 13:8, we are reminded that "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." If YHWH could part the Red Sea, He is still the God who makes a way where there is no way.

* Identity: According to Colossians 1:13, God has "delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son." We are no longer slaves to "Egypt" (the world); we are citizens of the New Jerusalem.

* Hope: The "Song of the Lamb" in Revelation 15 reminds us that the story ends in a victory that has already been won. Our deliverance is not a "maybe," but a finished work.

I was asked to speak on God as Deliverer. So, I took the opportunity to ground people in Revelation as a book of Deliverance, an Exodus, rather than a book of modern technological terrors for which we are frantically trying to predict a timeline.

The Acts 2:38 gospel is rooted in the Exodus. If you can't teach the gospel from the Exodus you're lacking in understanding.

Re: Exodus to Revelation

I'm studying through Deuteronomy and thought that the Revelation plagues tied not only to Egypt but also to Deuteronomy. So im adding this into the study:

1. The Scroll as a Covenant Document:
In the ancient Near East, double-sealed scrolls often served as land deeds or legal contracts. In this context, the scroll is the Covenant Law (specifically Deuteronomy). Because Israel failed to keep the law, the "covenant curses" (found in Deuteronomy 28) remained "sealed" or held in reserve as a pending judgment.

2. The Lamb’s Legal Authority
In Deuteronomy, only a "kinsman-redeemer" or a worthy authority could take the deed of the land. Because the Lamb was slain, he fulfilled the Law's requirements. By opening the seals, he isn't just reading a book; he is releasing the penalties of the broken covenant.

3. The Specific Curses (The Four Horsemen)
As the Lamb opens the first four seals in Revelation 6, the resulting judgments mirror the judgements and the specific curses listed in Deuteronomy 28:20-25:

* Sword/War: (Deut 28:25 / 2nd Seal)
* Famine: (Deut 28:23-24 / 3rd Seal)
* Plague/Pestilence: (Deut 28:21-22 / 4th Seal)
* Wild Beasts: (Deut 28:26 / 4th Seal)

4. The Reversal of the Curse
The irony of the "Lamb looking as if it had been slain" is that he took the Deuteronomy curses upon himself (Galatians 3:13). Therefore, he is the only one with the right to enact the final judgment of those curses upon the world to bring about the "New Covenant" inheritance.

Re: Exodus to Revelation

I'm getting off track of the topic of the Bible study which is God as Deliverer. But it's an tough rabbit trail to not follow.
