I find myself questioning more the intelligence of the guy that ran the add than I do whether or not the add was racist. I don't think it was. Stereotypes may or may not be true. From the persepective of that ad it really doesn't matter if its a true stereotype or not... what matters is that people will recognize that stereotype.
The problem with stereotyping is that its hard to change a stereotype. Once something like black people like chicken and waffles or chinesse people speak broken english gets started we accept it as true and annecdotal evidence is enough to make it true to us. All we need to have is one or two experiences with a black guy that likes chicken and waffles or a chinesse person who speaks in broken english in order for that stereotype to be validated in our minds. Heck, even a commercial that has a chinesse person speaking in broken english perpetuates that stereotype whether it is true or not.
