No church will accept me into their fellowship because I'm not a Republican. Nor do I allow them to force feed me the agenda of the GOP from the pulpit in sermons. I'll stand, interrupt, and call attention to the idolatry. And the liberal churches around me won't accept me into their ranks either. Why? Because I don't like to hear sermons that bless the agenda of the DNC from their pulpits either. I've yet to find anything but house churches that focus entirely on Jesus. Maybe it's because they are more open for discussion and they know they can't cram that stuff down our throats.

How many times have you thrown the word "liberal" around at me, like it's a bad word? You're a well trained follower, I'll give you that.

But as for being called a "liberal"... I'll have to quote President Kennedy:
“If by a 'Liberal' they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people-their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights and their civil liberties-someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a 'Liberal', then I'm proud to say I'm a 'Liberal'.” ~ John F. Kennedy, Profiles in Courage
A - my entire family background, on both sides, is Democrat. I was the first registered republican, as far as I know ever.
And the reason I registered Republican?
Abortion.
When one party is steadily increasing in its stands against everything that I believe in and the other is at least paying lip service to it, I have no choice.
Unless you believe in missonary dating for political parties, I really do not see how you can be a Dem and a bible-believing Christian.
Now, I have friends who are Dems.
And I have friends who voted for BHO.
But, when we discuss politics, they have no clue what the Dems stand for.

The issue of abortion troubles many Christians who identify as Democrats.

It's important to understand that not every Christian who identifies as a Democrat agrees with the Democratic Party 100%. Just as I would assume that not every Christian who identifies as a Republican agrees with the Republican Party 100%.

There are many Democrats who are Pro-Life. The primary organization that speaks for us is the DFLA (Democrats for Life of America): http://democratsforlife.org/

I guess that, to me, being "prolife" isn't strictly related to abortion. It includes honoring the sanctity of life from the womb to the tomb. That would include not only limitations on abortion, but strong wages for working families, a strong social safety net providing security for the poor & elderly, universal health care, common sense gun control, strict limitations on war powers, and abolishing the death penalty.

For me personally, the two issues that are biggest to me is the need to curtail corporate power in our democratic process (preferably by abolishing corporate personhood) and the need for real healthcare reform that truly insures every single American citizen. The war in Iraq (a war I question, and believe to be an abysmal failure) will cost us over $6 trillion through the next couple decades. I believe that money would have been better spent to fund a national health insurance program. In my mind, my family is more likely to face serious health issues requiring comprehensive medical coverage within the next 20 years than be attacked by terrorists, be flashed by a transgender in a public bathroom, or wake up "gay married" in Vegas. But that's just me.

And so, even with her problems, I see the Democratic Party more willing to address the issues that matter most to me and my family than the Republican Party. But please, don't assume that I "like" the Democratic Party, or agree with it 100%, just because I identify with them over the GOP. Because, I don't. I seriously think both political parties are filled with corruption that hinders what good they could actually do for our republic. And primarily, I blame the increase of corporate power and money in our process. I truly believe that corporate power is a greater threat to our republic than the specter of "socialism".

Sadly, because of my views, I'd not be welcome in 95% of the churches within driving distance of my home.

I'm sure that what makes it a bit more complicated is that if a pastor or preacher gets "political" in the pulpit by demonstrating their support for a politician, I feel they are welcoming me to get "political" in the pew. I'll stand, politely interrupt the man, and ask why he would use the sacred desk of God to preach his politics and not stay fixed on preaching Jesus? I then politely remind them that the church isn't a political action committee for any political party and that I don't agree with his politics and that I came to hear about Jesus, not his politics. I've been politely asked not to return by two churches.

I've considered just politely standing up and walking out the moment one begins to berate a political view (or politician) or praise a political view (or politician). Maybe I'll try that next time. lol

But for the most part, house church works for me. They are typically rather Christian anarchist (like one might see among Quakers) or they are at least wise enough not to bring up politics in a discussion based setting. Our elders have shut down people (including me) if they feel we've become too unreasonably political on an issue. lol
