A "rat" is something Pentecostal women used to put in their hair to make it stand up - usually on top of the head, rather than on the back of the head. Things used for rats ranged from hair actually collected from hair that came out during washing, brushing, or combing hair, or Quaker's Oat Cans, Socks, Pantyhose, and a few unmentionable items that I knew were used by some women. My thought was always that they weren't planning on "shockamooing" with all that in their hair. I have actually seen "rats" - saved hair, socks, and pantyhose go flying across the church. Don't you just know that would have impressed a visitor?? Thank God that is not a part of the culture anymore.

My "rats" were composed of teased up hairpieces with a hair net over them. I used a big one for the big bun and then two tiny ones for the sides...if you notice my JCM pics...I had more hair than I had me..LOL.
Blessings, Rhoni
P.S. I am also glad this is not part of the 'culture' anymore! I can get a BIGGGG DOOO...but it isn't so radical! !

I remember making rats out of nylon net material that we stuffed inside of a hairnet. You put that thing on your head, then tease your hair and pile it all around it and then see if you don't ITCH to death!!!

Those were some good times, but I don't ever want to go back to women using "rats"......Thank God the Year of the Rat is behind us.

I had a huge wad of brown yarn, enclosed in a hair net. Then I had a "fall" or hairpiece that went over that, and then my own hair. It definitely wasn't my glory.
