Christian Indonesian Governor Jailed for Blasphemy

A minority Christian Governor of Jakarta Indonesia has been sentanced to 2 years in prison for blaspheming the Quran. Here is the article in USA Today;

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/...emy/101458040/

JAKARTA, Indonesia - An Indonesian court on Tuesday sentenced the minority Christian governor of Jakarta to two years in prison for blaspheming the Quran, a shock decision that undermines the country’s reputation for practicing a moderate form of Islam.

The five-judge panel said Gov. Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama was “convincingly proven guilty of blasphemy” and ordered his arrest.

He was taken to Cipinang Prison in east Jakarta, said one of his lawyers, Ronny Talampessy. Ahok said he would appeal but it was unclear if he would be released once an appeal was underway.

Outside the court, supporters of Ahok wept and hugged each other amid shouts of jubilation from members of conservative Islamic groups.

“Here we have witnessed that the judge has become a representative of God, that the judge has upheld justice,” said Syamsu Hilal, a member of an anti-blasphemy group who reported Ahok to police last year.

Massive protests in the past six months against Ahok and Tuesday’s verdict are among mounting signs of an increasing religious conservatism in the world’s most populous Muslim nation, which has been traditionally been seen as a bulwark of tolerance and pluralism in the Islamic world.

Vigilante groups frequently attempt with impunity to prevent Indonesia’s religious minorities from practicing their faith and the country’s gay community has faced a surge in persecution in the past two years.

By the way his blasphemy was to state in a campaign speech that is is not against the Quran for a Muslim to vote for a non Muslim. That got him 2 years in jail. !!!!!

While many American Christians adhere to easy believism and once saved always saved. We may be experiencing this here at home before we know it. Christians better know where they stand.

His "blasphemy" was to tell Muslims the Quran does not forbid Muslims from voting for a non-Muslim...

Indonesia is supposed to be an open and tolerant nation... It is supposed to have a secular government... So what happens when the Quran becomes the Constitution?

Islam is often "moderate" and "tolerant"... at first. But once they become a sizeable group or majority Muslims will use the established political system to advance their agenda and impose religious law.

We need to seriously strengthen the separation of church and state.

I would also consider re-classifying Islam as a subversive body politic, not a religion. The only danger is how doing such a thing to Islam only opens the door for the government to do the same thing to any religion.

The church needs to be freed from all control of the state and guaranteed absolute 1st Amendment rights.

Hitler took over the Lutheran Church and converted it to Nazism.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer and others protested by forming the Confessing Church which swore allegiance to God alone.

There is no such thing as an "absolute" 1st Amendment right. For example, There is freedom of speech BUT you cannot scream "fire" in a crowded movie theater. There is freedom of religion BUT you cannot perform ritual human sacrifices etc.

Yet, we can agree that the government should make no laws respecting religion. Today, however, this must be balanced against a subversive political organization that is masquerading as a religion to advance its ideology. No religion has the right to subvert this nations laws to advance its supremacist ideology.

This is why everybody was surprised at this verdict,. Even the prosecuter was just seeking 2 years probation, not jail.

Islam is becoming more militant even in this country where up til now it has been restrained from showing this kind of intolerance.

Probably more to it than the media is letting everyone else know.

Who ever knows the real story about these things.
