The Believers of Acts 19

Were these believers saved before Paul showed up? Obviously they were good people doing the right thing. So why was not the Holy Ghost given to them before Paul arrived?

Re: The Believers of Acts 19

Your speaking of the believers that hadn't received the Spirit yet, correct?

Well, from my understanding is these people hadn't heard anything of a Holy Ghost. They couldn't pray for or yield to something that they didn't know they needed or that it even existed.

They didn't know of the truth, but when Paul brought it to them, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus, and they were filled with the Spirit. They spoke in tongues and prophesied.

They were disciples of John. They were waiting for Messiah, and hadn't heard that the Messianic outpouring of the Spirit was available yet. Thus, Paul preached Jesus to them and they became Christians.

Unfortunately, they are at risk of dying, going to hell, and then being cast into the lake of fire where they will be tormented eternally.

Doesn't that make you want to go out and rescue the perishing, care for the dying, snatch them in pity from sin and the grave? Does this knowledge make you weep over the erring one, lift up the fallen, and tell them of Jesus the mighty to save?

Re: The Believers of Acts 19

The dissemination of the Gospel in the 1st century took a long time. It didn't happen in a corner, that is for sure, but it didn't spread through the empire like a viral marketing campaign or movie trailer with 30 million views on youtube in a single day, either.

So, imagine for a moment, you're too old or sick or pregnant or had to stay home in your diasporan situation and couldn't make Jerusalem for Pentecost when Simon Peter preached. Before word ever gets back to you about Jesus and the resurrection and the Holy Spirit, you pass on, never knowing the New Covenant has been revealed and given.

Yes, it is appointed unto men to die and then judgment, but these I think could be said to have died in the faith, still waiting on the promises, no differently than any other OT saint. This is evidenced by, in Acts 19, their immediate response and obedience to what Paul preached to them, that is, a demonstration and proof of faith, that saved them.

Now, once the Gospel was preached throughout all of Asia Minor and into Europe and Africa, the transitional period between OT and NT eventually ended, and there was no excuse. But before that period ended, how could it be any differently?
