It was in his best interest to be one before. Perhaps it is in his best interest now to flip-flop.

Re: Colin powell is no republican

This may be true but I think that what also has to be considered is that there are many people who have considered themselves Republicans in the past that are now disillusioned by or turned of by the party. I think that that is something that the GOP better address or they could start to become irrelevant, particularly with younger people.

As TRFrance posted in the election section:

Not surprisingly, Obama just said Powell will have a place in his administration:

WASHINGTON (AP) - Colin Powell will have a role as a top presidential adviser in an Obama administration, the Democratic White House hopeful said Monday.

"He will have a role as one of my advisers," Barack Obama said on NBC's "Today" in an interview aired Monday, a day after Powell, a four-star general and President Bush's former secretary of state, endorsed him.

"Whether he wants to take a formal role, whether that's a good fit for him, is something we'd have to discuss," Obama said.

(I think we all kinda saw this coming...)

Politics are always dirty and disgusting. This season has been particularly so.

He stabbed his own party in the back.

I don't have the respect for him I once had

Re: Colin Powell is no Republican

I suspect Powell still views himself as a republican. Remember there is a very old strain of North East Republicans that are quite moderate (actually left of center) and CP is from that North East area.

Powel has always been pro-affimative action, pro-choice on abortion. So while he is still a republican it is very honest to say that he has never been a conservative. And there is a difference.

I for one am not shocked at all by this. Its been a long time in coming. I just wish he would have been more honest about his reasons.

Re: Colin Powell is no Republican

Ferd,

You don't think he was honest in his reasons - being McCain's choice of VP and concerned about the two seats available on the Supreme Court?

I just wish when he said that about Palin not having enough experience to be President that the next question asked of him would have been and you believe that Obama has more executive experience.

He hasn't openly identified himself as a Republican in quite some time. So at least as far as public perception, he's more of an independent.

Besides, even if he's still a registered Republican, he's no conservative for sure, as further evidenced by this comment from him:
"I would have difficulty with two more conservative appointments to the Supreme Court, but that's what we'd be looking at in a McCain administration."

What a disgrace. I know hindsight is 20/20 , but I think GW Bush choosing to bring this man into his administration was a big mistake.
