TRF - ask your pastor about me. Ask him about the conversation that we had about a preacher who was "no longer with us..." Ask him if he remembers how angry - how hurt - he felt when someone in the backseat next to him brought that up.

Here are three things I look for in a genuine prophetic utterance (and words of knowledge):
1) Something that is NOT vague (or incredibly vague -as is usually the case).
2) Something that is NOT already "common knowledge".
3) Something that is NOT a "safe bet", aka, "the stock market will continue to go down before it starts to rise!" or "something bad will happen to this church or someone IN this church, or a relative of someone in this church, sometime during the next year!".

And lastly,

4) Accuracy accuracy accuracy!

"When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him" (Deuteronomy 18:22).

Remember that when they say, "Touch not God's anointed..." If he was "God's anointed" wouldn't he have been able to pick the correct winner of the mayor's race, or at least have had the sense to stay out of prophetic political prognostications all together? Or is that a "pot shot?"

Notice, it doesn't claim the obverse -- that if the thing does happen, then the Lord spoke it. Lucky (or skilfully crafted) guesses don't prove that the guy's a prophet. Oh man, I had a very "interesting" discussion on this with an AG guy a while back. After defending the idea for several emails, the poor guy ended up trying to claim he'd never been taught in many years with the AG that God speaks to people today.
