Cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, are our nation's No. 1 killer. To urge Americans to join the battle against these diseases, since 1963 Congress has required the president to proclaim February "American Heart Month."
Our heart is about the size of our fist. It pumps 17,200 quarts of blood per day (that’s 4,300 gallons); 6,278,000 quarts per year; and almost 500 million quarts (439,460,000 quarts) or 109,865,000 gallons over a 70 year life span.
