Midweek Bible Study 2/11/09

Since this coming Saturday is Valentine's Day and February is Heart Month, this is tonight's midweek Bible Study

HEART MONTH

Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. KJV
Keep vigilant watch over your heart; that's where life starts. The Message
Proverbs 4:23
My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.
Proverbs 23:26

Cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, are our nation's No. 1 killer. To urge Americans to join the battle against these diseases, since 1963 Congress has required the president to proclaim February "American Heart Month."

Our heart is about the size of our fist. It pumps 17,200 quarts of blood per day (that’s 4,300 gallons); 6,278,000 quarts per year; and almost 500 million quarts (439,460,000 quarts) or 109,865,000 gallons over a 70 year life span.

The word “heart” is mentioned about 779 times in the Bible
The Hebrew word is “Leb” (labe) meaning feelings, will, intellect, center
The Greek word is “kardia” meaning thoughts, feelings, mind, middle

1. HEART TRANSPLANT
diseased: Jer 17:9-10; Gen 6:5; 8:21
new: Heb. 10:16-17; Jer 31:31-33; Ezek 36:26-27
Ref 1 Samuel 10:1-10; 2 Cor. 5:17

2. HEART PROBLEMS:

Troubled Heart
John 14:1, 27; Phil 4:6-7; 1 Peter 5:7

Divided Heart
Psalm 86:11-12; Joshua 24:14-15; 1 Kings 18:1-46; Mark 12:28-31
Numbers 32:12: Deut 1:35-36 (whole heartedly in NIV)

Unclean Heart
Psalm 51:1-7, 10; 1 John 1:5-10; Rev. 1:5

Arrhythmia
abnormal heart rhythm ( normal is 50-100 beats per minute)
caused by electrolyte imbalance, injury, recovery from surgery
heart can be too fast or too slow
850,000 persons hospitalized every year for arrhythmia
Going too fast, we get ahead of the Lord
Going too slow, we lag behind

Heart Murmur
1 Corinthians 10:1-13; Numbers 16:41-50

Heart failure
Rev. 2:10; 1 Cor. 15:58; Galatians 6:7-10

Re: Midweek Bible Study 2/11/09

Last night after I was home it dawned on me that I had not talked about a condition called a Hard or Hardened Heart. I checked my notes today and, yes, it had been omitted. I guess while I was "typing" up my notes I dropped it.

Hardened Heart
Hebrews 3:7-19 warns us against "hardening" our hearts.
If we are not careful, we can build up a callous on our hearts. It will no longer be soft and tender and we will fail to hear God. This would be like what is spoken of in 1 Timothy 4:2 as searing our conscience. We will fail to believe Him and suffer the consequences of lost rewards as the children of Israel did. They died in the desert and failed to enter into God's promise because of unbelief.
Pharaoh continued to harden his heart against the warnings of Moses.
Stephen accused some of those first century Jews of being stiff necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears and of resisting the Holy Ghost (Acts 7:51). This would be the same as hardening their hearts. Proverbs 28:14 and 29:1 warn us against hardening our heart.
