View Full Version : ICE!!!!

In Central Missouri we have about 1" of ICE this morning! The worst I have seen. Walking outside about an hour ago I heard many trees/limbs snapping and falling. Many power lines are down now. If we get any wind at all today I expect the power lines to go down everywhere in the area.

I am an EMT/Firefighter (volunteer) and have missed 3 pages so far. The only people moving are those with chains... I wish I had put mine on.

Oh no! I remember the ice storms like that, awful destruction but absolutely beautiful. It's just too bad the beauty is shadowed by the people who you know are going to be harmed trying to walk or drive on it, the limbs falling, the trees killed, the power lines damaged, those w/o heat and power due to that...bleh.

They are beautiful, but treacherous!

Be careful.

Still have power - but the freezing rain is starting again... and many lines and trees are already down.

Weird thing - last night it was 25 degrees and from 2:00 to 6:00 AM it rained and THUNDERED. It was quite strange.

Thats because the air was a bit warmer in the upper atmosphere. The rain came down, and when it got to a lower altitude it began to freeze. This is the laymens term on why the frozen rain, lightning, thunder. This happens, but not frequently, which is why you find it strange. LOL!

We are also plagued with ice and such. They say more is on its way.

Around 3 am we were without electricity and heat..THAT wasn't plesant. It came back on around 11:30. This new batch of weather is suppose to be worse.

My daughter said they didn't have church this morning in St. Louis because of the ice. Unreal the weather can be so difference just a few hundred miles away!

We only had about a quarter of an inch last night, and already we've had two branches fall off our pine tree, and another evergreen tree next to the house is split down the middle!

The roads weren't actually terrible, but we're supposed to get more ice tonight, and since it rained all afternoon, I have a feeling it'll be pretty slick by tomorrow morning. Jeff brought in extra firewood in case the electricity goes off.

To which I say: YUCK!! Ice, ice, GO AWAY.

My backyard is trashed. Many more limbs have fallen since I took these pics. Several state highways are closed due to fallen trees blocking.

Stephen, did you folks cancel church today?

We had ice here today too. We had my family Christmas party scheduled. About 90 people. We went ahead with it, but some couldn't make it because of the weather. Not too many, but a few. Most are brave souls (or stupid).

They've already called for a 2 hour school delay for tomorrow morning. If the ice doesn't melt very quickly, they will cancel.

This is the worst I have seen here. Thousands out of power in rural central Missouri. I have been responding to fire/rescue/medical emergencies today. My pager is going every hour. One tragic death too gruesome to describe... related to falling tree limbs.

Our church does not cancel but few went. We live a distance away (North) from the church and did not consider going. Many roads are closed including some state hiways.

Getting worse in Missouri. 800 in our small community are without power. Any sizable tree is butchered, and many have fallen on houses... several injuries.

:( That's the worst part of ice storms, the damage and death and destruction and no power/heat and then more deaths.

I should find out how far north this went and check on my mom I'm starting to think....

Ok, I can't find what I'm looking for real quick and I have to run again. Do you know how far into Iowa this went? It looks like it may have stayed south of her (she's near the Minnesota/Iowa/South Dakota borders) and I won't be home until too late to call her tonight.

I don't think Iowa got much of this and the system coming tonight is from here (central MO) and Southward.

Just drove home from work in sleet, ice pellets, freezing rain....I don't care what you call it, it's not fun.First you scrape all the ice off your windshield and than when you're cold and wet, you get in the hopefully warmed up car to drive home.
I have 9 miles, and it involves several hills, so I'm a basket case and drive about 10mph.
I was very happy to pull into my garage.

The forecast says it will continue all night and change to snow in the morning.
We're on the northern edge of the ice, north of us will just be snow.

The USA is full of great & awesome places to visit but a lot of people come out here because you get a lot of bang for the buck. SF, carmel, napa wine Country, Yosemite, Tahoe, Redwoods, santa barbra coast, LA Hollywood, Disney etc.

The West coast has great weather and is very beautiful, if you can put up with (in no particular order):
Mudslides
Earthquakes
Fires
Floods
Riots
Housing costs 5 times other places (my 2200 square foot home in a very nice neighborhood would be a 500 square foot apartment in a mediocre neighborhood anywhere in CA.
The morning "murder report" on how many people were murdered overnight (I never got used to this living in San Diego- no it's not an "official" report, just watch the news in the morning when they start talking about how many people were killed, etc. overnight)The main thing I miss about living out there is the perfect weather almost every day (except for those two weeks a year where it rains non-stop and causes flash floods) and people are much more health conscious and physically active than most other places in the US. I love the redwoods also, I found it an almost spiritual experience to stand next so something so old. But, I'd rather have to worry about a hurricane or tornado every 5 years or so than all of the other stuff.

This kind of logic makes no sense to me. sheltie, the last time someone dies out here in an earthquake was in 1989 or 90. I believe that 76 people died yet there was 1,200 who died in Katrina alone.A few years back, chicago had a heat wave that killed over 700. The cost of housing is high in many areas but in those areas the wages are higher.
