Thad,

I recall Sis. Rita Dawson from way back in the 70s. She passed away in 1991 and her husband in 2005.

Here is a copy of the obituary for her husband:

That congregation moved closer to Bakersfield. The church at Lamont where Jimmie Davis pastored is the closest. Elder Blotto is the pastor now.

Thanks, everyone for your input.

I preached a revival in Weedpatch many years ago when the Dawson's were pastoring. I experienced my first earthquake while there. The parsonage had upstairs bed rooms and it was just about breakfast time when I started down the stairs and almost fell down because for some reason it seemed the chandelier over the dining room table was swinging back and forth and the china hutch seemed to be dancing. I thought I was the one who was moving. It was a unique experience. I can't imagine what an earthquake of size would be like.

As I recall their were vineyards just a few hundred yards from the church and parsonage. I also recall how arid it was. I could play basketball with the young people in 100 degree temps and hardly break a sweat and I am the kind that sweats at freezing temperature.

I enjoyed my time there and then I went north and preached for a black church in Fresno (offering church is what I call it) and then on up into the big tree country for a revival in a small home missions work. I can't remember the pastor's name but I found some pictures of them the other day.

Boom, I may scan the pictures and see if maybe you or some of the others from the Northern areas of CA might recognize them. they may have pastored in the Redding area. i am not sure.

Elder Vaughn was the preacher in Fresno. Steinbeck used Weedpatch in his "Grapes of Wrath" novel.

That name "Weedpatch" always intrigued me.
Why would anyone name a town something like that?

So the name of a church there would be "Weedpatch Pentecostal Church" or "Weedpatch UPC" or something like that. Of course, a OP church in a town called "Trinity" could have some interesting names.

Most of Jimmy's members scattered and went to either IHT's or Mullings after he passed- i think it was during the time that the son was pastoring??

The Dawson´s were some of our closest friends. She preached our very first ladies convention in Brazil. Sister Dawson was probably one of the smartest people in her day in the Pentecostal ranks. She was an awesome woman.
Their church continues but is in Bakersfield I am supposed to be with them in Feb.
Their last pastor Brother Pulse passed away with a heart attack.

My brother in law before he passed away pastored Brother Davis´s church.

There are several churches in Bakersfield.

The "new" pastor of the Weedpatch church is a Bro. Blackwood.

Incidentally Pastor OJ Johnson is Bishop Vaughns SIL and they are doing a wonderful job in Fresno. They are NOT really affiliated (if anything very loosely) with Bishop Jakes.....long story short he attended one of Jakes conferences and signed up for something and was listed as one of his churches. I know several Pastors that are listed on Jakes website who have no affiliation with him, other than that they attended a conference and filled out information card.

:jaw :uhoh Coughing!!! Choking!!!!!!! GASP!!! Oh man, WERE did you get your info on that one Thad!!! I think I have a pretty good idea!! RD came out of that church, but I doubt anyone on this forum would call him a great preacher at this point!!! And I don't think Gary actually came out of the Dawsons church but he is married to their daughter Shelly and is the DS of SD now (at least I think he is still the DS). He is definitely a great preacher, we have him come out at least once or twice a year.

The Dawsons were truly great and loved people! The thing about them that always made the biggest impact on me was how, no matter what your differences were, as far as standards go, they were never judgemental, and always loving.

Daniel Dawson was killed in a tragic car accident the day before Easter last year (2007), and it was a huge tragedy. He, of all of the Dawsons children was most like his mother to me, he never met a stranger. Daniel had many flaws, but you would be hard pressed to find anyone who knew him, who didn't love him. His funeral was the biggest funeral that I have ever been to. I am glad that his parents were not alive to suffer that, it was a huge loss.

No, Daniel was definitely not a policeman, and the Bayers daughters, (three of them actually) went to our church. But they were very close to the Dawsons (I'm not going there) largely because of RD. He is the one who convinced them to move out here, they came with their dad once when he was preaching a revival at our church, and they got really close to RD and his wife (at the time). They weren't out here all that long. I think I was about 13 or 14 at the time.

BTW, I'm not in hiding, but this has been a HORRIBLE new year for me, and my internet service is down at home because of some wiring damage they are trying to fix.

I had a major dental catastrophe on Sat. night, and because of the holiday, everything has been closed, so I have been housebound since then. I would really apprieciate everyones prayers, I am very down, I am going to have to start this new year off with about 6 or 7 thousand dollars in new debt for my dental work, at least. On my income, this is very upsetting.

Nope... Gary Legg did spend his earliest years in San Jose but a great deal of his pre-teens were spent in Albuquerque, NM. and his teen years were spent with ME in Duncan, OK. My dad was very influential in Gary getting his license with the UPCI. Gary's mom and Dad and Grandparents went to my Dad's church in Duncan, OK.

Bro. Legg and Shelley are still very dear to my heart. They were the reason I was even in Weedpatch or at Bro. Vaughn's or at the church further north.

I loved the Dawsons. I was unaware of Daniel's death.

Bro. Jones, I'm glad that you have gotten something out of this, the Dawsons were very good people. You can say a lot about peoples ministry, and there were a lot of people touched by that church over the years, but beyond that, I don't know that I have ever heard anyone say a bad thing about them, they were genuinely well loved.

The actual Weedpatch church is now in Bakersfield, it has been through a lot but it seems to coming through it OK now. I think someone already mentioned that Bro. Pulse pastored there after Bro. Dawson died, but he also died last year. Kenny Blackwood, who has been in that church as long as I can remember is now pastoring it.

The Dawson children are spread out, as I mentioned, Shelly is in SD, the oldest son (I am blanking on his name) is in FL I think, Becky and David are in Arizona (I am pretty sure about that), and Daniel was the only one left in Bakersfield. If you know the Leggs, I'm sure they would love to hear from you, they are two of the sweetest people I have ever known. (I can get you contact info) They were devastated by Daniels death, it was such a tragic thing. Daniels wife and two sons go to our church, it has been a hard
road for them.

BTW, what time frame were your parents in OK, and how far is where they were from Henrietta? My grandparents pastored there for a while in the late 70's early 80's I think.

My parents were in OK from birth to 1979. Henrietta is up in the Tulsa area (NE Oklahoma) and my parents were in Lawton and then Duncan, OK (SW Oklahoma). It was a "fur piece" from Duncan to Henrietta.

BTW... The first name that comes to mind when I think pastors in Henrietta is Bro. and Sis. Cook? Would that possibly be your grandparents? My dad and Bro. Cook were very close. After Bro. Cook retired from pastoring my dad would have him come and preach for us a time or two every year.

I just noticed the time frame so I doubt that would have been the Cooks. Regardless, I may well know your grandparents if they were in OK in the late 70s

I recall hearing him preach at a campmeeting probably back in the mid 90s and he would come to the church I attended and preach every now and then, I think - unless I am confusing him with another person with the last name of Campbell.

He was almost always smiling - just like Sis. Rita Dawson. I remember him having gout in his feet and having to be in a wheelchair for a while. I hope I am not confusing him with someone else. It's been a while ago.

We have that album with the Weedpatch choir members on the front - with the song "When Time and Eternity Meet" ...I think Sis. Dawson wrote that, but that might not be correct either. Time kind of blurs the memory.

I have some cassette tapes of his preaching. When spring cleaning times come in a few days, I hope to categorize my preaching tapes by ministers' names and put his tapes on a list of "To Listen"....There was one sermon of his that I listened to several times but right now the title escapes my memory. I have the notes of when Sis. Dawson preached back in the 70s. I know I have them somewhere, too.

Bruce Campbell died??? I thought he was still alive and kickin. I know last time I saw him he was pushing 400lbs, but I thought he was still alive.

He passed away last May, I think it was....... I can't believe it's been almost a year.
I will never forget it... I was in Burlington Coat Factory when I received the call.... Left my cart there and all....my children and I went to the car and just cried!

Scooter...... I am surprised you are just now finding this out....I thought anyone who knew him or his family knew that he had passed. He was sick for a few weeks before he passed on. He had hundreds of people at his funeral........

I remember hearing about this, Daniel Dawson had died not long before that, and I know that some of his family members were so upset because Bruce had not gone to the doctor about this until it was too late (if at all). They were saying it was such a waste, Daniel had his life ripped from him but Bruce could have avoided his death by going to the doctor when this first started.

I don't know if that is an accurate assessment of the situation, but their feelings were pretty raw at the time.

I don't disagree with you sister. I have more respect for someone like him who stayed true to what he had taught, than I do for some of these men who have preached people into hell over going to a doctor and then when they got cancer, all of the sudden it was different.

I do feel for the family members.

Well, I can tell you this much: there was absolutely no way Bruce Campbell would ever go see a doctor. It's true that antibiotics could have saved him, but it would have cost him his standing among the crowd he ran with. I will go so far as to say that, had he gone to the doctor, his whole ministry could have been ruined.

You see, he preached against going to doctors. For him to see a doctor, after all the years he preached against it, would have caused him a lot of shame.

Anyway, I probably shouldn't say too much more about it, because I am liable to cut loose and tell you what I really think about him dying. It's enough to say he died for what he believed.

Sister, one of the really sad things for me about him dying is that I tried getting him life insurance when I was in the business. I put together a really good package; one that covered him, Sis. Campbell, and the kids. His weight caused the insurance company to be willing to insure him, but at a much higher rate than he was willing to pay, so he didn't take the policy out. I hate to see any widow have to go through the death of her husband without any life insurance. Anyway, what's done is done and he's gone now.

I used to feel the same way! I know preachers will preach it hell fire but you really never know what you are going to do until it is your time to choose. Some men, like Bro. Campbell held out and he still won! He's made it to heaven. Some men become scared. I used to judge that but no more.... We can't do that! Even though some preach it hard.... Bro. Campbell preached it hard but when it came down to individuals, it was their choice....

The next time you and Brother Alvear are in the States get some. I know it's not something people want to think about, but life insurance isn't that hard a thing to get. Lots of companies offer those no medical questions asked policies nowadays. You can't buy a whole lot of insurance that way, but something is better than nothing when the times comes.

I don't know if that is an accurate assessment of the situation, but their feelings were pretty raw at the time.

I'm Bruce's sister Donna. I can't speak for everyone in our family but as for me I wasn't at all upset by his decision. And I know that's also true for his wife and kids, my sister, and also my dad Boots Campbell. Bruce lived what he preached as did my dad who died the year following Bruce. Both trusted in God until the very end. I wasn't there when Bruce passed but I was with my Dad the last few days of his life. He was continually singing right up until he lapsed into unconsciousness a few minutes before he died. He wasn't at all afraid, as a matter of fact, my dad, who loves a captive audience had all of us who were with him laughing hysterically most of the time. He even attended church a day and a half before he died.

I also know that the reason Bruce didn't go to a doctor was not because he was worried it would reflect poorly on his ministry. It was because he believed 1000% that if it wasn't his time to go that God was fully capable of healing him instantly as he had many, many times in the past. Bruce also attended church the night before he died. They had to carry him in on a couch because he was too weak to stand.

I don't think Bruce, dad or Aunt Rita (Dawson) believed it was a sin to go to the doctor, they simply believed that God was more powerful than any doctor and if you truly believed that in your heart why would you need to go to the doctor? They all died trusting God but they've also all been healed trusting God, as were the majority of our family more times than I could count. And not just from little boo-boos, we've been healed from life threatening injuries. Those of you who've read Aunt Rita's book "Twenty years in a place called Weedpatch" are aware of many of these instances. I myself was in a car accident as a child and was paralyzed from the neck down with internal bleeding. I was healed instantly and was outside playing a short time later. I don't think many doctors are capable of that. My Aunt Lacy, who is in her late 90's has never seen a doctor in her life. Her family was called in by her nursing home about a month ago because she wasn't expected to live through the night. About a week later, her sister, who does see a doctor was given a month too live, she died in the hospital 2 weeks later. My aunt Lacy, without any medical treatment, only prayer, is still alive and kicking.

I'm probably an odd person to be defending faith healing, especially to other apostolics, as I've been out of church since my teens. I've just recently began attending again. The reason I restarted was BECAUSE of Bruce & Dad's deaths as well as my mom's a few years earlier. I thought how wonderful it must be to face death without fear knowing with a certainty that you are going to a better place. It's easy to talk about how wonderful heaven is and how you can't wait to get there, the hard part comes when you're put to the test. I can't say I have the kind of faith that they did yet, but it definitely is my goal.

Rita was one incredible lady. not too many like her around anymore.

we have stacks of her tapes- I'm getting in the mood to dig some of them up LOL

Hi,
I know this is an old thread, but I'm Rita's niece (Boots Campbells daughter & Bruce's sister). I saw that you said you have stacks of her tapes. Is there any chance I could pay you to make a copy of them for me? Our family has been trying to put together a full set of her tapes but nobody seems to know what happened to the originals and the few that we've been able to come up with are very fragile from repeated playing. It would mean the world to all of our family if we could get copies. Thank you

I love the Dawsons very much...and Brother Campbell was a fine man...

Where to begin...I started attending the FJN in Weedpatch in 1949, with my great grandmother (Maggie Choate) we moved there due to her health, from San Francisco. I was 5 yrs old at the time, and Bro Jess Campbell was the Pastor.

Bro Campbell was Rita's Grandfather. He was a great preacher, as was Rita. I grew up at the church and even lived with Rita and Dearl for a while when I was a teenager. I was with them when Mike was born.

Later I went into the Navy and while home on leave I met the girl I married...(we are still married 45 yrs. later.) she was from Cupertino..where Bro. and Sister Noel Daniels pastored.

I can remember, Healings, Devils being cast out, Salvation being sought, Sermons preached and the Lord moving in a mighty way. Rita was a tremendous preacher and I loved to hear her speak, especially when the annointing come upon her. God did use her in a great way.

As for the comment about doctors... In the beginning of that doctrine they did believe it was a sin to go to doctors...but over time they realized that it was not a sin, but if you could have enough faith to accept your healing, you would recieve it. If you could not do so, then a doctor could do all he could and still...it was the Lord that did the healing. Doctors can not heal, the only assist nature...All healing comes frome the Lord, for By His stripe we are healed.

I had to chuckle at Donna's comment about Boot's (her dad) making them laugh....even when he was about to leave this body. He was that was when I was growing up,..always funny, pulling pranks and jokes on people, but a great guy. I moved away before he had children and I don't know any of them.

The last time I saw Dearl and Rita was in the late 70's. I lived and pastored in Tulsa, and they stopped by to visit for a short while. (I think they were there to preach at Bro. Steele's) Not long after that I moved to Indiana and as life goes, we all lost contact.

I heard of Rita's death and of Dearls, Sad, yes...but rejoying also, for they had gone to meet the Lord and I know that they are having a grand time.

I knew Kenny Blackwood, and Rodney Legg.(I heard he passed yrs. ago.) Several of the others mention in this thread I remember and it brings back great memories of my youth.

Where have the yrs gone...I am now 65..Still looking for the return of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I do some missionary work in El Salvador and some evangilistic work around the states.

I am independent, non denominational, and have the pentecostal experiance, of the Holy Ghost. Baptized in the Name of my Lord Jesus Christ.

I wondered what happened to Mike, and I see by this thread he is in Florida..does anyone know where, or have a way to contact him?

The Dawsons and Campbells were grand people that I grew up with and I have never forgetten them. One thing I do know...I will spend eternity with them

BTW, I remember when Rita wrote the song "When time and eternity meet" my wife still sings it in chruch. Dearl used to sing "Oh the downward road is crowded." Mavis Davis (if I remember her last name correctly) and Janice LaCount...man they could sing as could the Weedpatch choir..and I still have the record, its about wore out now.

I named my oldest son after Dearl, even spelled it the same. Dearl was a great influence in my life as a kid and a teenage.

Ok .... enough from me for now...

Oh yes, if any of you posting here remember me, feel free to email.

as a kid I was known as Billy

The Weedpatch church hasn't actually been in Weedpatch for quite a while, they moved the congregation in to Bakersfield years ago. Went to Weedpatch and Lamont yesterday and the air was very refreshing.

?????? I have to say that I find that highly doubtful!!! I mean, not that I question your truthfulness, but... :spit :ursofunny :ursofunny

We have had a week of rain and wind, but still... ??? Very rarely in these parts does anyone call the air "refreshing"!! :ursofunny

I saw this thread had come up and had to post.

My Grandfather was out in Stockton at the Bible college in 1964. He later evangelized in California and fellowshipped with the Davis family. Talking to him a few months back, he named some names including Bro. Cavaness, Bro. Terry, and a good many others.

The only church that I can say for sure that my Grandfather pastored was the church in Kerman.

Heard Bro. Mullins preach this past January he said he was fomerly from Weedpatch.

Yes. Weedpatch was for all the Migrant workers coming from Oklahoma during the Dust Bowl. Quiet a few families passed through there before spreading out around California's Farming Valley.

Jimmy Star Davis pastored in Lamont. How do I learn more about him ?

He pastored in Fresno in 1945 until 1947. Did he have a diary ? Did he say anything about Selma Nelson ?? She retired ( as pastor) from the church but still attended it until her death in 1972.

Elder Juan Alvear Sr. (Father of Jonathan Alvear) Pastored there some time after Elder Davis. I'm not sure who was after eld. Davis but eld. Alvear came sometime after. When Alvear died, eld. Paul Blatto took the church. When he died, various good men filled in to help. Now Elder Dennis Mantooth pastors there, the town is now called Lamont, and the Church is Called Apostolic Tabernacle. Great Church, very Apostolic in every way!

8901 Weedpatch Hwy, Lamont, CA, 93241

Many saints still there from the Davis years.

There was a Bible college of sorts at this church. Looks like around the year 1978. I have not done any research on it, yet. If it were ran by a lady, it would be the third small post high school Oneness college in San Joaquin Valley.

Who would have thought ??
